Whats an old cj worth?

Found a old CJ. Fianaly talked to the guy that owns it. He said he wanted $600. its a CJ5, With a hard top, hard doors, Inspection sticker has 89 on it. He said the motor was rebuilt before he parked it and that the transmission was bad (3 speed).
Body is in good shape, All the glass is there.
So my question is, Whats a old cj like this worth?
 
there's still a lot of variables. An "old" CJ-5 really doesnt narrow it down much...they stopped making them in 1983, but it could be from the mid 50's.
The hardtops and doors are not too common, could be worth the $600 right there.

Like T said, SO many variables. That said, the value of anything is subjective. It's worth as much as you will pay for it.

Are you looking for a good deal on a CJ you want to buy? 5s are not the choice to build as an off road rig but work fine for a restored DD.

Are you looking to "steal" something you can resell or part out and make some money? Again, 5s are a dime a dozen but as T said, if it has some desirable parts you could recoup your investment quickly.

Bottom line, if it runs and is not rusted out, $600 is not bad IMO.
 
Beware of the "motor ran fine before I parked it". (Uhhh...why did ya park it?!) I have never bought an old Jeep that didnt "run great before they parked it" One was even "just rebuilt before they parked it" (turns out tho, THAT ONE WAS!)


Price it as tho its locked up unless you can get it running b4 you buy it! Price it on what you see. Tub condition, missing parts, broken stuff, damage, etc.

Oh...and BTW. If it has the old steel hard top and doors, I would like to have the doors!:rolleyes:
 
Went and looked at it a little. Floor pans look good, dash is all there, has some rust around the tailgate, The top is fiberglass and so are the doors, Doors have slide windows in them.
front window is busted. He said he parked it cause the tranny was bad. Im sure every seal on it is bad, its been sittin 21 years. I dont know if im gonna buy it or not. Id buy it if i could get my money back out of the top and the doors. I dont know if its worth $600 though.
 
I would think it's definitely worth that.Plus him asking $600 to me implies he would probably take $500 for it.I would go with $500 cash if a CJ5 is what you want.You could easily sell parts of it and make money on it you had to.
 
What year is it man?I would be very interested if the doors and top would fit a 74 or I could include a decent soft if you are interested.
