Considering buying a Tahoe in SC private party. How could I buy this vehicle and drive it back? how much would a ticket be for not having a tag?

I would think that a LEO would not write you a ticket if you have a bill of sale dated for that day, the title, and proof of insurance on the vehicle.

I'd just call and add it to my policy, have BOS and title ready if you get pulled, but with as many cars I see running around with no tag down here I don't think you'll have a problem....

I asked a NC trooper I know about this. He got no direct instruction from his superior officer about it. His off the record suggestion was to have a BOS, tell your insurance of the purchase & have current proof of ins with you. He added that the best way to get a troopers attention is a car on the highway without a tag. So barrow a tag & don't draw attention to yourself going home.

I would go with mangler , having no tag has always work for me. I always keep a notorized bill of sell on the way home with proof of insurance

If you put tags from another car on it, you can get a nice ticket for that. It is safer to just not run tags. However, if you don't have tags and a officer sees you, you will likely be pulled, however they will let you go most times if you have all the paper work. I have always put other car tags on it though, although that is not the best idea.

Using another vehicle's tag is pretty much a guaranteed ticket from a trooper. Yes, having no tag screams "pull me over please", but I would rather get pulled and have the right papers.

No tag equals a ticket. Wrong tag equals the same ticket plus a couple of more and it will cost you your tag for 30 days many times.....

Actually, if you buy a vehicle, you can run the tag off a vehicle you currently own if you are transferring the tag (that is how many car dealers do it when you trade). You need to have the Bill of sale and the registration for the tag and proof of insurance.
The biggest thing is the proof of insurance and BOS or title signed to you. IF you are going to run a tag, make sure it is YOUR tag and it has not been thirty days since you bought the vehicle.

Also, if I recall correctly, SC does not require a tag from a private sale for the first thirty days, in order to get it registered. NC and SC are reciprocal states so you should be good to drive it home. But you still need insurance and BOS or title signed to you.
