I'm considering a new transfer case in my rig and was collecting parts for a 203/205 doubler, and I have the cases just dont know if I want to spend $1k to buy the adapter plate and shifters to have two old transfer case that are heavy and long and only give me 4:1. I canceled all my 4x4 magazine subscriptions years ago after it seemed I kept reading the same articles but as a result I'm not up to speed on the latest greatest stuff including deep reduction transfer cases. Surely the atlas has some good competition by now. What's everyone running, what's a good price point for such a case, oh and to make things exciting I'm a mopar nut so its got to mate up to my 727 torque flight, and I'm running a 440 big block and 42" swampers and my rig weighs around 5500 pounds, and like any mopar nut I like the skinny pedal. I'm mostly crawling with my rig but don't need 9 different ratios to pick from although a low and a low low would be nice. So any advise, links to tech articles, etc would be greatly appreciated. Or if you have one for sale I'd appreciate a pm with more info too.

Thanks in advance

Dave

Have you looked at a 241/205 doubler, not sure if the cost is much difference but it will give you two different low selection and then a low low.

I think Atlas is still your best bet as far as full transfer cases. There's Stak but I think they were having problems but possibly resolved now. There's a bunch of crawler box's out there from DIY types using planetary gear sets from other cases and then the NWF black box and the new one from that company makes all the FS chevy stuff(there name eludes me right now).

** offroad designs is there name.

lots of other box's to choose from like that though. All with in a few hundred dollars of each other.

With a rig of that size and power, you are going to want something heavy duty like an Atlas, Stak, 203/205 doubler, black box/205, etc. I wouldn't fool with the lighter duty doublers (ie 231/205). I've read too many stories about them breaking.

If you skim around on pirate a lot of guys who made those 231 doubler's where you hack up the factory case now make a billet case that you just use the gears from the orignal case. Comes with a new shaft etc. look pretty tuff but not a whole lot of them out there yet.

that being said I don't pay much attention to mopar stuff so don't really know whats out there for them specifically.

Atlas! That's what I did and have never regretted it...their pricey, but you gotta pay to play....actually if you really add up all the component cost of going another route they're not terribly more expensive, or that's at least how it worked out for me

Well since I already have the 203 and 205 and the trans to bolt it to. I guess ill order the doubler kit from Sumner and just bolt it all together. then figure out shifters. I should be good for $850 once its in the truck. then driveshafts.

JB conversions is doing another run of low max Np205 (chevy) gearsets right now if you get on it. They aren't cheap either but are definitely cheaper than an atlas.

I vote Lomax 205. Yes they are back in production and the strongest tcase on the market right now. I've seen way to many Atlas's break to ever sink the money in one.

Where do you wheel that you have seen 'many' Atlas TC's break? I've heard of the odd Atlas breakage, but it is typically in a rig with 3 times the amount of power of any factory V8 undergoing SEVERE abuse.

I've wheeled a bunch, saw a lot break. So far what I have NOT seen break is an Atlas, and the 203/205 doubler. I have experienced, and saw yokes on both break though.
I think you will be fine with your choice.

Unless your Tim Cameron I don't think your going to have any issues with the strength of an atlas. So far the only person/time I've heard of one breaking.

99% of us will never break an Atlas. I watched atleast two break at Morris mtn a few weeks ago. Tim Cameron did as well at DT I believe it was. $50 junkyard 205 is as strong if not stronger than a $3000 Atlas. That's where I'm at with it.

If you do manage to break the atlas gears, they'll fix it....lifetime warranty. They're more compact and lighter than a 205 which means a lot to me as well

Yeah, I'm a big 205 fan but you can't talk up a 20-30 year old tcase and say "atlas's" break all the time. The hill killers are all switching to single speed monster truck tcases now anyway and can/will probably break a few of them as well. I sure wish that stak wasn't such a piece of shit company, sucks to have only one real choice. Especially for those with ford stuff.
