What's the Difference? DVD R question

I bought a RCA VCR/DVD Recorder Combo last year. At the time, I also bought a 4 pack of Memorex DVD+R DVDs. Those DVDs worked great. Yesterday, I picked up a 20 pack of Maxell DVD-R DVDs. Both DVDs feature 4.7gb, 120 minute. The Memorex DVDs are 8x and the Maxell DVDs are "Up to Max. 16x". So I put one of the new Maxell DVDs in the player and the player shows "Disc roblem"/"This disc may be dirty, have an incompatible format or region code".
I thought DVD+R and DVD-R were the same thing?:confused:
 
No the older DVD + - were 2 diffeent formats, most new DVD drives will play both (and have multilayer write capability)
 
I went and found the box that the recorder came in after posting the question. It reads, right on the side of the box, "DVD+R/DVD+RW Recorder With VCR". I guess I'll be returning those DVD-Rs tomorrow.
