I have always had toyotas in the past, and I bought my first Jeep a few weeks ago... well it runs about 209 degrees in normal driving.. It goes up and down a little bit, but generally it stays around 209..

I have the AT and 4.0 engine.

is this normal temp? or do I need to replace some thermostats and coolant or radiator?

I do feel that the temp is somewhat correct, cause I can feel it being physically alot hotter than what I would call normal, when I touch the radiator hose...

I am going to the beach this weekend, and dont want it to overheat on the beach, cause I know sand driving is quite a strain on the engine and ya cant go very fast to cool it back down.. so I was a little concerned.
thanks

yea I was searching the net, and found a page that states that if it stays below 190 that it will make the engine ping.. so it actually needs to run that hot.. hahah thats seems crazy to me, but o well.. as long as it dont pop the radiatior on the beach.. Ill be happy

When i built my stroker, at first i had a stock replacement thermostat in it, i think 195*. it always ran around 210, and would hit 220, sometimes higher, in heavy traffic conditions. This is with a stock mechanical fan. So, I switched to a 180 t-stat, and now it runs a happy 190-200, and occasionally hits 210-215 in really heavy traffic, or hard wheeling.

If i had an electric fan, and the engine got up to 225 or so, then started cooling back down, i wouldn't worry. But with the mechanical fan doing all it could, and the temps still creeping up, i didn't have confidence in the setup

190-200 - manual transmission. Even under the worst conditions I've never made it go over 200. Mine is Canadian made if it makes a difference.

I just flushed the radiator, and put new antifreeze in it... and now its leaking antifreeze all over the place..

I have a feeling that the previous owner put stopleak in it to avoid changing the waterpump.. and I cleaned all that out, and now its leaking bad...

its hard to tell where the coolant is coming from cause I cant really see the waterpump that well..

I hope it isnt a bigger problem. like a freeze plug... it clearly dosent look like its coming from the intake tho... so thats a plus

well I jsut changes the thermostat and waterpump, and drive belt... but its stilll drying so Im gonna add the coolant after work, and see what happnes..

hope that fixed it.. it was $155... and thats eating away at my beach weekend money,.

Sunday afternoon I was running down the interstate wide open and my junk was getting up to like 220-225. I dont know if it was cause it was so freaking hot outside or what but on the way back at nighttime it was back to 210 or so.

lmao i just went to auto zone yesterday and had them look up the thermostat temp cause i was worried 210 was alittle hot the thermostat temp is 192 so 210 is good. i put in water wetter and it has gone down about 5 degrees.

for my TJ with 4.0

Silla 1-Core Alum Rad with use of Integral Tranny Cooler cause Auto Trans
New OEM T-Stat
New Serpentine Belt
New Water Pump
50/50 Peak Antifreeze/Distilled Water
Redline Water Wetter
OE Mechanical Fan & Clutch

Runs at 210-215 Deg F in the heat (with or without A/C on)

I just changed the coolant, waterpump, thermostat, belt, and all.. and its running 208-210...

glad to know that 210 is normal temp for a 4.0L
thanks yall..

BTW I changed all that junk cause it had a monster leak in the waterpump.. that showed up once I changed the fluid, and clean antifreeze washed out the old sludge.. and reviealed the shortcomings of my cooling system.
