If this is in the wrong section, I'm sorry. I wasn't sure if it would be better here or in Newbie tech. I'm wanting some professional opinions on this Jeep. I'm wanting a toy/winter beater and I believe I've found one. It is a 1988 Jeep Cherokee with 167k miles. 4.0/Aw4/Np231...It has a 6" lift, new 34x10.50x15 Super Swamper LTB's with 15x8 D Windows, also a full size LTB spare mounted on a D Window, smittybuilt winch, rock sliders...it runs and drives great, 4x4 works great. It has been used as a trail rig as the body damage shows that. No rust underneath the Jeep, very solid there. Surface rust from where it has been bounced off of a few trees lol...It has a clean title. With that said, what is it worth? I'm wanting to buy it and ready to make a move I just don't want to screw myself. Thanks for the help! Here's the pictures...

High mileage renix engine, body is beat, way too much lift on stock short arms, bias tires that can't be fun on road. I'd give $2k max for it. You can find a nice late 90's xj that is clean and runs great for about the same, or a well built xj for about $5k

It may sound weird, but I like that it's already beat. I have more money to spend on something nicer, quite a bit more, but I'm going to be scared to do anything with it other than drive it on the road at that point for fear of messing it up.

I understand wanting a beater over something nicer, I did the same move when I got my Tacoma. With that said, I wouldn't give the $2k mentioned above. I would be more in the $1200-$1500 range, and most of that value is in the wheels and tires. Poor suspension geometry (short arms), weak axles, and years of use and abuse.... If you could take any of those out of the equation, the value increases.

Then use the extra money and do long arms or three link it, what gears are in it, does it have lockers, and what rear axle is it?

How is the tie rod flipped on the drivers side knuckle?
I'D say 2k jeep also. And most of that is in the tires.

yeah those are the expensive things... really there is nothing "pricy" I see that has been done except the tires.
Note also, that front driver's door dosn't look like it seals? Do you care if you have rain water coming in?

All that black spray paint is covering rust....I can see quite a bit. That driver's side tie rod end is ass backwards, as mentioned. Oh, and the sway bar ends were cut off as seen in a few pictures.

I'd pass and find something else if it were me. If you really must have it....get it as cheap as you can.

Is that for sale in Boone?

Check the for sale section here, you will end up happier most people on here won't bs you to get you to buy it if there's a problem and They know about it they tell you, and there more likely to know what has been done to it besides what you can see that someone bolted on to it

Believe it or not, I've had a HELL of a time trying to find an XJ or even a ZJ (an XJ is really what I want). Most of them are overpriced, need work, body/paint is shot etc...I've owned several of them and have never had a problem finding one but now...to the above poster about the door not sealing up..it looks to me like it doesn't seal up either. I wouldn't be too worried about rain coming in with it being a toy only. I have two nice daily drivers.

I've been talking to him for quite awhile now. He offered it to me for $2,400 delivered to my house. I'm in Hickory. I'm still torn as to what to do. I guess I'll have to sleep on it some.

I'm in the Asheville area kinda if he'd meet id take a look at it for ya

I don't think it's tagged/insured right now. He's sent me videos of it and it's sitting out on his property out at the road with a for sale sign in it. I don't want you to go out of your way but that would be awesome so neither of us would waste each other's time.

Where is it at and I'll see if I can get out there

i'd walk away from this deal-too many potential issues going on. for how this one is setup, i'd look for a stock xj or zj first and build it the way i wanted to. xj's in decent shape are beginning to get harder to come across for cheap, but zj's are just about all over the place for cheap. depending on what you want, i'd still go for something other than a renix engine.

My initial reaction was $2500. It looks to have the 8.25 rear axle and the sway bar ends haven't been cut off, they are quick disconnects that are disconnected. You can tell because there is a hole where the pin goes. Not that all the pieces are there, but it doesn't appear cut to me. I would agree that there appears to be rust under that body damage on the driver's side, but it's hard to say for sure. That front bumper is tweaked so you may want to check the mounting points and also verify that the winch works.
