For me, it has nothing to do with lazy, it's more time. Much faster for me to use a riding mower (45 minutes) versus a push mower (90 minutes). That frees up time I can do other things around the house.

I mowed lawns for money when I was a kid. Sometimes as many as 5 lawns per week. I had an old school non-self propelled push mower.

I bought a riding mower with a 42" cut though after I bought my house. It took me 1.5-1.75 hrs to cut the grass with the riding mower. I would hate to think how long it would have taken with a std 21-22" cut push mower.

Was not saying riding lawn mowers are for lazy. More that self propelled push mowers are for the lazier people that use push mowers

I also mowed lawns for $$ when I was a kid, pushing the mowers all around town to maybe a dozen yards I mowed, none were very hilly but some took 2 hours to mow because of the size. It was not that hard for a kid and good excersize. I have a rider now also to save time, but if my yard was smaller I'd still be pushing one, not walking behind a slow self propelled one.

I'd rather have a push mower over a self propelled. They are lighter and easier to mow under bushes and around small trees and stuff. Plus makes mowing ditches easier, but for the rest of the yard gets the 50 inch zero turn, sometimes the 70 inch grounds master :D
