To start I know a fair amount about the 22re's I have never had a problem like this before. It's an 87 22re, the problem is it is very hard to start like its flooded, think this may be the cold start injector, then when is starts the warmer the engine gets the more it smokes, (white/blueish tint to smoke)and will idle down and cut off. It's not oil tho just smells like its running rich. Then it takes awhile to get up to 180* and the heat blows cold, and it got up to 210* today and the heat was still blowing cold. So WTH I need it fixed its my daily driver. Any suggustions. Thanx.

I would check the air meter door and make sure it moves freely. The wiper may think its taking in more air than it really is. Im not too familiar with any other specifics on 22re's but have dealt with vane air meters on other vehicles.
Just a guess

problem update: blew the head gasket today after having to pull it down the road for 100yds to get it started (the plugs were pretty black and smelled like gas. Blueish smoke could have been from worn valve guides, will find out b/c I will go through the head.

i love these motors. ive got 3 of them. 84 xtra cab 4x4 truck 22r, 83 celica gt 22re, and a 84 celica gts 22re. sounds like the head gasket was already blown. white smoke=burning antifreeze. hard to start= water in the cylinder. no heat could be a couple things. could be the heater core bypass valve stuck or cable broke, or the flap inside the heat/air box not moving, or there was no water flowing through it cause the compression of the motor was pumping air into the cooling system causing it to vapor lock. could also be a cracked head. the 85 and later closed chamber heads were bad about cracking. if it is mixing water and oil you need to check the timing cover too as the plastic timing guides in those things will break and let the chain cut a hole in the side of the timing cover water jacket letting water pour into the oil pan. just an fyi if the head is cracked you can buy a complete new head from carolina auto supply for around 250 and they also have new timing covers too for like 60 bucks. hope this info helps.

Thanx for all that info, the head gasket blew between the #1 &#2 cyl. I have to go see if its cracked tomarrow my dad said he can see something but can't tell, (my dads eyes are not as good as mine).

Well the head is cracked between the valves in the #2 and #4 cyl. Guess I'll have to find one.

Guess your dad's eyes were better than yours after all.

Get the new head and timing kit from, engbuildr.com Ted has everything you need and his prices are also good.

got a new head and everything back together Sun. Everything seems fine exept for a exhaust leak. Did find out what was making it run rich and stall out, it was the temp. senser. Its amazing how one little senser can screw up a whole engine.
