Whats your crawl Ratio?

Oh yeah, that Gary. His attention span is too short to finish a lot of things! :D

Hey

t18 - 6.32:1
D20 - 2:1
4.56 gears & 35" Boggers

57.6:1 crawl.

but i'm curious about you guys that have the super super low gearing. is that really needed for the type of wheelin you do or is it a bit overkill? mine feels almost too low sometimes, but then again i'm not a hardcore rock crawler either. also, how are you achieving your low crawl ratios?

happy trails,

I went from 53:1 to ~118:1-177:1 depending on how you factor in the torque converter.. 53:1 wasn't low enough sometimes, other times it was too low..

Having the auto helps a TON, since the gearing is basically infinitely variable, but I most often found myself loafing around right around the TC's stall, so basically 58 or so:1. But when crawling a large rock, being able to go slower is nice.. But there's always second and third (4th too!) if you find your first gear is too low.

Having a variety of gearing available IMO is more important than having a low crawl. If you're too low, you might not be able to bump up something very well, or get any kind of wheel speed...

BillaVista's first part of the über Dana20 article went into gearing choices very well... worth a read!

IME, it depends entirely on the trail and the terrain. I'm something like 109:1... which I seldom use. There's no wheelspeed down there, but when it comes to navigating tight lines on high-traction surfaces, it comes in very, very handy. I agree with Rich where gearing choices are concerned, tho. For my 12 forward gears, only 6 are discrete. The rest overlap all-but perfectly. If I had an extra $1k to throw at it, I'd look at using a 2.7 Klune or 3:1 WMS 203 in order to split the gears I already have. Not something you *need*, but there have been a couple of times when I wanted a gear halfway between this one and that one.
