When do you rewire?

My 1984 Jimmy is a wiring nightmare! The A/C would blow a fuse a day because the wiring under hood was melted. The radio was rat nested by the previous owner, and the gages are gone (even if they were there, the wiring to the sensors is dangling...).

I have all new Autometer gages. I guess A/C would be nice to have (for my future ex-wife). I also would like to find the places to hook up the wires so that I can monitor the water temp, oil pressure, and fuel level...

When do you guys just say, "Screw it, let's rewire this beast!"?

It's an '84 Jimmy. It's time time to say "Screw it lets get a real rig!" J/K. It sounds like you need to rewire it. Just take it one thing at a time. First do the temp gauge. run your wiring from the temp sensor to the new gauge and install it, then do oil pressure, etc. As for the melted A/C wiring, well, uh, A/C is overrated anyway.

The stock instrument cluster was a printed circuit board and would do you little good anyway.
Fab you up a panel and drop those auto mete gauges and go to town.
Incorporate a new fuse block or reuse the original...nothing there is overly difficult and the peace of mind knowing its done right will be worth it..

Though i have to ask why you care about a future ex,,,,,
