When is a deal too good to pass up?

I got a call out of the blue, from someone that I purchased a trailer from a few years back...they want to sell me an old gas Massey 135 tractor that I had said I liked when I was on their property.
I don't need a tractor.....I don't need a project.....but the price is less than $1,000.

What makes something too good to pass up in your mind? I know most of the "screamin' deals" I have got in the past ended up costing me a ton of time and money before they were something I could use or resell.
 
This discussion is likely to spiral out of control so I'll just go ahead and give it a push :stirthepot::laughing:

After many years of "great deals" that in reality became another albatross... as well as many years of marriage and balancing a family.... I've come to realize that there's the financial cost, which is easy to calculate, then the time / life / emotional cost which is much harder and easier to overlook.
Aside from buying it what are the inconveniences that will come with this purchase / new project? What will you have to set aside in order to make it happen? There's only 24 hrs in a day, and presumably you're already busy and don't have hours in the day that are just not being used.

Lets take this tractor which I know zero about just as an example. If if needs repairing, what will you be NOT doing while you're repairing it? Will you have to set aside another active project? Skip after-dinner playtime w/ kids? Get up earlier on Saturdays?
Where will it sit? Do you need to move another thing to make space? where will that thing go... is it something that needs to be finished to move out of the way first?
Then there's the "keeping the peace" side... I've been given a dictum by my wife, NO increase in net vehicles in the driveway, if one comes in another goes out, otherwise I'd better be prepared to sleep in it and receive my divorce papers from it :laughing:.
Happy Wife has value to me, as do happy kids.

Sooo.... IMO the screaming deals have to include these things. Sometimes its still a screaming deal. And sometimes the screaming is on behalf of Wifey...
 
This deal sounds terrible for you. You should just send them my contact and save yourself the trouble :D


On a serious note, if you dont need it and wont use it then dont but it. But if you have property and need to maintain it those are good little tractors.

Not in the least bit! If I had someone offer me a sub $1000 135, it would have the bushhog on it permanently.

yes, and I also only have half an acre of land so space for all dem tractors is limited

You also need a spare tractor in case one needs maintenance or a friend needs to borrow a tractor.

Me now realizing I have no tractors and no land anymore to tractor. Im sad.
