Where are you guys getting your insurance for your off road vehicles

Most any inland marine policy would cover it.

Problem is, annual premiums are typically 10% of the insurred value

I would suggest searching SEMA's membership directory for insurance carriers and there is likely a company that can provide this for a reasonable cost and that is familiar with the industry.

I have an inland marine policy on my skid steer and it's only about one percent of the insured value. I don't know about the crawler premium. Just doesn't seem like it would be ten times higher but again I have no idea.

Its likely that a home built rig, which has zero engineering and testing before it goes into use, has a higher risk than a skid steer (which likely has thousands of hours of R&D and testing and made to meet certain govt regulations and standards for safety, etc. WITH factory warranties).

If you skid steer catches fire year 1 due to a mechanical failure, are you going to claim insurance or warranty it with the manufacturer becuase of faulty design or parts?
Same scenario but with your garage build crawler... I bet the answer is different :)

Another problem is there seems to be a gap in this industry. Given that, there is no history to review for comparison. So, the underwriters have to make a less informed evaluation of risk, which will likely NEVER result in a low risk outcome.

check out Classic and Specialty Insurance here in Raleigh, they have the policy on my Drag Car. They can do assumed value on what you think it's worth to replace.
