I went to the junk yard recently to get a front right axle shaft for my 1995 jeep wrangler because the end of the shaft is scorn so badly that i am leaking gear oil. In the junk yard, i found a cherokee that had a dana 30 with the same vacuume disconnect axle shaft as mine. The only thing different about my axle is that it is equiped with ABS Brakes and has splines at the front of the shaft which the ABS sensor would read. I can not find an axle shaft at any parts store. The only place i can find them are online but they are overpriced compared to the axleshafts without the ABS. Can anyone help suggest where i can get this type of axle shaft for a good price please!!!!!!

put your stub shaft on the JY outer shaft, no? its one universal joint to remove and install.. remove the old outer shaft from the old stub, remove the new stub from the new outer, and put your old stub on the new outer..

Keep in mind XJs and YJs used 2 different U-joints over hte years. I think 95 is the first year for the larger 297/760 U-joint. Earlier shafts used the smaller 260 joint.
Is the tone ring pressed on the stub, or part of the casting? I just half-assed tried to remove one last week, but it wasnt moving.

the tone ring, I'm not sure, but I think they are milled into the stub..

Yes XJ's did change to a larger joint, and they killed the vacuum disco's in 92 I believe, making the XJ shaft the smaller 260x. Did YJ's change size too?

Why not if you can find the right shaft without ABS cheaper at the parts store with the same size U-joint, you can do it the same way. if so it would probably cost the same as getting a cross size uni for different shafts (plus the shaft from the junkyard) -- if they even make cross size axle uni's. (I know they make cross size UJs for driveshafts.. but they are $25-$30 a pop)

on another note, what's wrong with a one piece shaft? probably more available with ABS, but lose the disconnect "feature"

the tone rings are pressed on but i wouldnt try to remove it. i can hook you up if want with a axle shaft and ujoint. my 95 yj has the larger ujoints(297) i also have the driverside shaft with the larger joint too. i never run out of these things. ha

i would upgrade my axle and yank the vacuume disconnect but i don't have the money to do that. and i already tried to switch out the inner shaft with another but its hard to find the size of that shaft with the bigger u joint.
What would be the benifits of not having a vacuume disconnect by the way? Is there a big difference? if it is ill try to save up for it if it is worth it

The advantage to a one piece shaft is that its one piece and doesn't need vacuum to actuate a collar to engage the front axle drive. Other than that, unless you are running a locker, no big difference.

Jeep did the two piece cause they thought it would help gas mileage -- but it didnt. So they got rid of it in late years. (XJ Info: all under 90 were two piece, some 91s were two piece and some 91s were one piece, 92 and up are one piece)

I think PAP gets like $35 for a shaft, not sure though. Bugger it, if the XJ HP30 shaft is the same length, find one with ABS and yank it.
