My wife and I were talking and referred to Spartanburg, SC, as Sparkle City from a CB reference that my parents used back then. She then asked if the CB craze started with Smoky and the Bandit. Yes, that, and Convoy did. I got to thinking it was big, and in the 90s, we got Internets, and in the 80s, we got PCs.

My dad and his friends had CBs in their trucks and boats in the 70s,80s etc. and they talked on them like a phone driving around. Dad and his friends would take their boats to down to Harkens Island to go fishing at Cape Lookout and off shore. Sometimes it was 4 or 6 trucks towing boats going down and back talking all the way. We caught lots of Spanish,Kings, Flounder etc. One guy had a marine radio and he would tell us time to to haul ass back to the dock cuase storms were coming. My dads handle was "tree monkey" cause he cut down and climbed trees for money on weekends. Dad told me my handle was "crow killer" cause the first time dad took me hunting Crows with my new 20g. single shotgun I was 8 yrs. We were in pine woods and dad called the crows and one came over my head and I shot it and helicoptered to my feet.

My dad was a trucker once he got out of the marines. Used a cb shop in/near Blacksburg, SC for many years. Lots of good times with his old cb’s. One that comes to mind was when I did my 1st 4wd launch in my ‘02 CTD at shadyside dragstrip. This one fit perfectly in the pocket in my dash in front of the shifter. One boosted launch and it went over the front/back seat and hit the back glass hard enough sadly it never worked again. Funny part I’ll never forget, I was so focused on the light I never saw it go by me, just heard it hit the back glass. Immediately asked my intoxicated friend riding shotgun, WTF was that? “I don’t know! Go!Go!Go!” Over 20yrs later we still laugh about it til this day.
