I am looking for a ~10k pound winch. I would love ot have a Warn, but they are real expensive, so I am thinking about a Smittybuilt XRC10. Where is the cheapest place to get one of these?

Talk to Ryan at 4 wheel parts in Charlotte. He will hook you up.

Buy a used 8274.

I paid like $400 for mine. Sold the steel cable, bought 100ft of 3/8 master pull, bought a Superwinch contactor, and ordered some new battery leads and a bottom seal and bearing kit. Now its better than new, for only about $700.

If you buy from 4 Wheel Parts let them know you are a CTB member. You will get a discount and the club will get a kickback :)
You can also let him know that a Rock Corps member referred you. He is a member of our group.

Dont rule out some of the other vendors on here. Carolina Truggies can get Warn stuff for a good deal tool. Keep the small guys alive.

This, after seeing how fast these things are I want one. Plus they bring more cool factor than any other winch.

The reason I don't want to break the bank is this winch will be used very little, mainly to help me pull logs when I am cutting firewood or to just to have in case I get stuck on a logging road. I want to spend less than $500, so that is why Warn is out, even their value series.

I put the XRC12 on my Ram 2500. In your price range. It has done some SERIOUS ECORS unstucking, Forest Service work and wincing of my 8k# truck!

Go to harbor freight and get the badland winch its made by ramsey and has all metal planetarys warn has plastic internals

I have the 12k from harbor freight and i have a lp8500 from superwinch superwinches customer service is excelent and the best i have ever delt with

Talk to Andy at Tarheel 4WD Center. If he cant get you the cheapest prices, he will at least tell you where you can. I ordered my Engo from Jason at krawloff-road.com and it was at my door in about a week. Nothing but good things to say about the Engo, and they have great customer service too.

The nice thing about those cheap Chinese winches is that you don't ever have to worry about anybody else asking you to pull cable.

If you buy a Warn, you'll be permanent winch bitch.

I've had two smittybilt winches, both were junk. I've owned the warn that I'd on the front of my buggy for 17 years, a xd9000i. Replaced the solenoids twice, thats it. possibly the single best 4x4-related purchase I've made.

i have three Warns in use currently and wouldnt consider anything else if i had to depend on it!! only issue is with my XD9000i took one too many dunkings and the rust took over, i had to clean the brushes and armature but i used i a few times in harlan this past wkend and it worked perfectly and when you get cracked out a warn may be worth an extra rock or two!!

scared to death!!!!!

So what are the opinions between smittybuilt, engo, an a harbor freight?

Engo.

I have a harbor freight on my j-10 and the wife has a smittybuilt on the zj both of them have worked great for a long time. I think most of it is how you use them and maintaining the gearboxes.
Oh and I bought the harbor freight used for $60

I went with the Rough Country 12000 winch. Seems to work fine. 400 bucks, already paid for itself twice plus the wireless remote us nice too!
