Where to get scrap steel?

I'm looking for plate, angle, square tube, rectangle tube, round tube and pipe.. whatever I can find. I'm not looking for junk to take to the scrap yard, but some stuff I can use for a few projects around the house, in the garage and on my truck. Some of it I want for practice welding, some for making brackets and such.

Decent size pieces I would certainly be willing to pay scrap price plus a little. I don't expect people to just hand over hundreds of pounds of metal for free. I've already been told about using bed rails for angle iron, just didn't know if ya'll had some tricks you could share. I even tried a couple of the scrap yards around here and none of them will sell off the yard unless it's by the semi-load.

Area I'm looking is Raleigh, Clayton, Garner, Knightdale, or even Smithfield.

Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

what type of 'scrap'? Where I work, we sell fresh 'drops' from material stock we use on projects, but it usually still gets sold at nearly market value, per pound. It might help to clarify

Type is listed in the first line above. If you are referring to size, I guess it depends on what it is. Plate I'm looking for things around 1/8" - 1/4" give or take, 6" square or bigger, or strips 2-4" wide and 2' or more long. Tube in round, square or rectangle I would say around 1/16-1/8" thick, 1" wide and up, 2' or longer.

Not sure exactly what you are referring to as market value unless you are talking about scrap prices. I know that 2 weeks ago, when I was at my local scrap yard, they were paying $9.00-$11.00 per hundred on steel, depending on what type it is. I would have gladly given them double that on some stuff I saw on the yard while I was there but they said that due to insurance issues, they don't sell off the yard to individuals.

To clarify my above post, what type I am referring to is this - are you looking for 'rusted crap' or just pieces of stock that people have laying around and may not use on the next project? Market value is basically $0.45 - $0.70 per pound (or at least wholesale price), depending on the material type - if you go to a real deal metal fab shop, that's probably what they are going to charge you.

Surface rust isn't a problem. I certainly don't want to try building something out of steel that is eaten through and would prefer it not be to the point of deep pits, but other than that I'm good.

Check out Dh Griffin in Greensboro. They resale scrap they take in. Got a 4ft by 5ft piece of quarter inch plate for $20
