I'm getting ready to build a cage for my Rzr and really want to have it powdercoated. I properly prepped and spray bombed the cage in my fj, but I'm not happy with how it's held up over the years. I want a coating that will stand up to the abuse it will get.

Do any of you have any experience with someone that can powdercoat a Rzr cage in the greater Charlotte area?

I'm thinking black, so no special colors are needed.

R & R Powder Coating

Located in Dallas but worth the drive. They do A LOT of work and are very professional. I've always been satisfied as well as everyone else I know that uses them.

Thought about a 2 part enamel paint? Not sure how it would compare cost wise to powder coating, but figured I'd mention it in case you hadn't thought about it...

I don't think that powdercoat is going to hold up any better for you, especially if it will be banging off of things like I expect the cage on a side-by-side would. There is a good thread on Pirate about powdercoating vs. painting right now. Paint is really easy to touch-up and re-apply later. Someone suggested thinning and running a roller.

Read an article discussing this in the VW desert racer realm years back. I can't remember if it was general consensus or actually mandated by the organization, but they said all chassis and cages were painted or left bare. Main reason being that if a crack or imperfection started to develop, it was much easier to locate during inspection if it wasn't covered with powder. Cracks could be found and quickly repaired before they became catastrophic failures. Made a lot of sense. Mall crawler: powder or automotive paint. Something your life may depend on: light rattle can or raw.

Part of that is that the coating can be removed for inspection, then re-coated after. Same thing for aircraft, especially when routine inspection with dye penetrant is done.. For race cages and chassis, easy repair is a lot more important than most everything else, and you don't need powdercoat durability for a race car that doesn't street use. Plus, powdercoat weighs a lot more than paint, which is obviously important for both racing and aircraft. You really won't find anything but paint for race cars.

Industrial gray rustoleum is pretty popular for budget racing, especially if baked at low temp. There's nothing wrong with automotive paint either. I'd rather use a catalyzed automotive paint than a rattle can for durability, unless you want the easy touchups from a rattle can. You can get 2k auto paint in a spray can too.

I reeeally like to powdercoat wheels and misc parts though. Prismatic Powders all the way, just find a shop that uses their powders in your area.. They go far beyond the boring old RAL color chart..
