As the title says, I want to upgrade to military style battery terminals on my TJ. Anyone got a suggestion of where best to get these? I know, google it, but just wanting to see if there is something local or somewhere in particular that anyone recommends. Thanks!

You used to be able to get them at NAPA if you had the part numbers. They'd have to order them in, but it only took a couple of days.

Of course, I don't have the part numbers anymore but it might be a place to start. If the counter guy is any good, he might be able to look them up in a catalog.

I have bought them from Wrangler Power Products

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll take a ride over to NAPA today.

I pulled a Chilton's manual off the shelf a minute ago, and what should happen to fall out... but a slip of paper that says:

NAPA Terminals
728222
728223

I'm sure those *were* the right numbers, but who knows if they're still correct.

awesome....thanks!!

I want to make some new cables but I prefer to get some welding cable amd make my own custom cables (and I need one for my winch anyway). Can this be done without one of those expensive crimpers (which I don't have)? Also, any good places to get some heavy batt cables (or welder cables) that anyone suggests (I'm in Mebane but work in RTP so any of the triangle is fair game to get this stuff). I don't know my exact lengths until I remove the old cables so kind of prefer to do this at home IF possible.

I've crimped copper lugs at home with a mix of chisels and pliers, etc. A proper crimp tool obviously does a better job, but you can make do. Sometimes, if I can't get a good crimp on something, I'll do my best, then fill it full of solder. The solder creates a stress riser in the cable, though, so it's best used in moderation.

Agri-Supply sells 2ga and 4ga welding cable by the foot... assuming they actually have any on-hand. NAPA and other places can get it, but they usually make you buy 25ft or something. I noticed that even Del City now works this way.

As far as the winch goes, I found it was actually cheaper and easier just to buy new cables from Warn. I got them through Amazon.

Everything on my Cummins powered CUCV is 00 cable. I made it from an old set of NATO jumper cables and with about 2000 cranking amps on tap, it fires up real quick :D. Even the starter lead is 00!

whatcha think about a solder only joint for the eyelette lugs attachment to the cables? I was just watching some youtube stuff on this (always worry myself with some of the F-tards on youtube) but it looks simple as can be to solder a joint on without crimping. Just wondering thoughts on it. I always overthink this crap I suspect.

If it draws too much amperage and gets hot, it can melt the solder out of the connection.

Solder-only worked for this f-tard, and I didn't even watch a YouTube video. I cut the corroded ends off my factory ram cables, then soldered the military terminals from Napa. This was maybe 5 years ago. I did end up pouring hot liquid solder on my hand at one point, that was fun

The last time I put eyelets on large wire I drilled a hole in the eyelet where the wire goes, inserted wire, and heated with my oxy-acetylene setup. Once hot just melted solder through the drilled hole.

Did it about two years ago and it's still holding up.

They're easy to replace and tighten. Mine were Free.99, so that's why I like them :D

Serious Question: What's so nice or special about the military terminals?

I was mostly interested in the mil spec terminals since I am adding a winch to my battery. The problem is adding an eyelette from a heavy gauge cable to the stock battery lug ends from the stock wrangler set up. I am sure it's been done millions of times but I'd like to neaten it up as i add the winch. It offers a separate point (bolt) to attach the winch cables or other accessories via an eyelette type end. I also think it offers a better battery connection that is easier to get on and clean up but that's probably just preference. If I weren't adding a winch, I wouldn't be dicking with this. Plus just another small project to play with I guess to make things a little more robust and clean under the hood at least in my mind. The other option I guess would be marine terminals which seem to be about the same concept as the mil spec in that the adapter attaches to the battery lug and has a separate bolt to mount eyelette lugs but the marine ends have a wing nut usually and are sticking straight up usually. I am not sure if there is any real advantage or disadvantage to one or the other but would be happy to hear someone identify it if there is.
