Where to take the Family Skiing?

Appalachian ski mountain is a good beginners ski slope for the whole family. I don't know if they have tubing though.
I've always had a good time at sugar mountain, and I believe that they have tubing. Pretty easy slopes for beginners, and some tougher ones if you know what you're doing.

Beech Mountain

Hawksnest

NC Ski Information

Appalachian Ski Mountain

Just a couple possibilities and some good information.

just got back from wintergreen and massenutten this weekend...massenutten is aright, good for begginers, wintergreen is my favorite place close and the best around next to snowshoe.(on the eastcoast) and wintergreen was voted best in Mid-east coast

how old are they?

Once you hit slopes like Winterplace, Snowshoe, etc...you'll never go back to NC slopes...

unless they're into just snowboarding...cause you can board forever on a short run, but I hate to ski for 30 seconds then have to get back on the lift...

I'm can't remember any of the NC slopes having tubing, but I haven't gone in a while...

i taught my cousin to snowboard in about 5 minutes at snowshoe....it was my first trip there and his first anywhere. i loved the place. and we got really lucky, there was fresh powder all day...although low visibility (it was snowing pretty good! haha!)

all in all though, for everyone being pretty much beginners...i wouldn't drive that far. especially when you factor in lodging/rentals/lessons etc. my first choice would be hawksnest. the boys will learn to snowboard in a beginner friendly environment, and if they catch on quick, still have some terrain to enjoy. you can get them some relatively cheap lessons as well.
and yes, the wife can toob.

Better double up on the health insurance, I see trouble ahead!!!!!!!

I agree with the others, WVA, is the better place to ski, here in NC we have man-made snow, more like slush, but, up there its the real deal...

Break a leg!!!!!!!

PS like my handle, ooooooops, a type-o, haaaaaaaa haaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!

Winterplace had fresh snow on monday and all but 2 runs where open. It is about a 2 hour drive from Winston. The next best place in NC is beach and guys ski free on thersdays as long as it is not a holiday.

hum I have never skied below 6000 Ft do we have mountains close to that here?
If you are used to sking out west, the mountains over here are disappointing. 2 hour lift lines for a 30 second run, I just bite the bullet and go to Colorado, Utah, or Tahoe. There is good sking in Vermont also, usually go to Okemo up there. But for beginners or kids the mountains around here work just fine, just the size of the places are tiny compared to elsewhere and that translates into long lift lines. The best place I've found around here (5hours away) is Snowshoe WV, it's a pretty good place for being close.

I reccomend Winterplace. Learned to snowboard there. They have some nice long runs that aren't difficult. Never went to the tube park but it looked like a lot of fun. I have heard Snowshoe is very crowded from people I have met at Winterplace. They go to Winterplace because there are less people.

I took my sister and brother in law to Sugar last year. Beech didn't have their tubing running last year. Sugar had 4 straight runs. A two hour pass was $20. We went to teach then how to ski/snowboard. All ended up tubing and had a blast! No skill required, but still lots of fun.

I heard that Hawksnest is the best for tubing.

Beech has tubing this year and did last year after the first week in January. Beech does have the best deals for beginners, go on a thursday for your family and you and your sons only pay for rentals, your wife will need a tube ticket but you should get out for under 100$

Colorado.

This east coast crap sucks. But then again, I did just get back from Snowmass (Aspen) a week ago, where we got 14" of snow in 5 days. I'm never gonna be able to enjoy Snowshoe again.:D
