which carb is in you samurai?

Im at a point where i am ready to rebuild my 1.3 samurai engine. In doing so, i plan on hopping it up, "cam, flat top piston's, and a new carb, ect...the webber , and harley carbs are two options I am considering. So, if you have or currently run one of these carbs, what is your preference for a daily driver. And what engine mods do you need to support the new carb. or what carb do I need to support the engine mods I want to make.
i have read, harley carbs have to have modifications. and they are best for wheeling.
webber outlaw 38 is best for street, but they can be hard to dial in.

Since you are going toward a performance type build, you're pretty much limited to the 32/36 Weber.
The CV (Harley) carb set-up is nice, but simply put, you will be starving for fuel with a modified engine.

I had a CV set-up on a bone stock engine. In fact I replaced a Weber with it.
When that engine bit the dust I put in an engine that was over-bored, cammed, had 1.6 valves and all on a 1.3 head.
It only took about a week to go back to the Weber with that engine.

Just noticed you mention the 38 Outlaw.
Look at it like this.
The Stock Samurai Hitachi is roughly 167 CFM. The 32/36 is 360cfm.
IMHO the Weber is too much, even for a modified engine, but it's a very adaptable and tunable carb.
Just FYI the 38 is 380 cfm ... it will give you more initial torque right from zero, but top end difference will barley be noticable.

First, if you are even considering a CV setup Call Myron @ Zuks Offroad in Arizona. He pretty much has the CV stuff mastered and can answer all your questions. I am running a MySide-2 40mm CV setup on my Sami. Stock motor and I daily drive it. Best upgrade I did. Stock carb made Uwharrie no fun. It was horrible. The CV, well, it purrs at whatever angle you can get it at.
 
I have wheeled with a well tuned stock carb and a weber 32/36 on separate vehicles. The stock carb actually was better all around. Many people were surprised when I told them it was still stock engine and carb. The Sami with the weber runs great on its side and up hill, but stalls going down hill...

After the stock carbed motor ate too much dust it got replaced with a 1.6 16V ;).
 
On yeah, the stock carb is by far the best thing, but the epa crap goes out and some of those sensors can be expensive.

I would swap in a 1.6 16v motor instead of building the 1.3 up and swapping carbs.
 
Just to get a rough quote i went on low range website and added everything i needed to my kart just to see how much it would cost and it came out to about 1179 bucks. this includes: rebuild kit with gaskets, high compression pistons and rings, mains and rod bearings, thrust washers, oil pump and timing belt. rocker arms , webber carb, torquer cam, fuel sending unit, and a clutch. plus what the machine shop charges me and i have not got that quote yet. This fits my budget well. don't know how much more it would be to install 16 valve instead but i bet it's quite abit more. im confident in rebuilding my 1.3 myself. not so confident on putting the 16 valve in myself. i have researched the engine swap a little and would love to do it, but im not a master mechanic yet and i think its out of my budget right now.

lizooki...my dad was telling me he thought the outlaw was to much as well. He said i would have to buy hotter ignition and have to put premium gas in it to get it to run right.

$1,200 + $80 for a fuel pump.

A guy on Zuwharrie.com had the 1.6 16v motor in his Samurai and was swapping it out for a 4.3 V6 Chevy motor. He sold me the motor with his transmission still bolted to it (clutch too of course), spare radiator, computer, wiring harness, engine mounts, transmisison mount, full exhaust system, EVERYTHING for $1,200. It also included the aftermarket power steering pump bracket for a Sidekick PS pump. The only other item I had to buy was an electric high pressure fuel pump which I think cost be about $80.
 
My engine is a Sumo II copy. Strongest running Sami around ... 1.3 or 1.6.
At least that's what I've been told.

I guess if I were gonna replace a stock carb now, I would try to do a 1.3 or 1.6 efi swap.

Doing a 16V swap is much easier than rebuilding an engine.

I bought a complete running 96 sidekick that I drove on my trailer for $800. It had some trans noise. I pulled the motor and wiring harness, sold a few small parts, sold the rear axle and front diff for $200 and scrapped the rest for $300. So, less than $300 for engine. It had already had the timing belt and water pump replaced so didn't do anything other than clean it up. I used the Petroworks swap kit and had Myron at ZOR do the harness. Don't remember exactly how much but not bad. Resurfaced stock flywheel, new clutch, couple hoses and fuel lines. A lot cheaper than you'd think.

alright, i'll back up and punt! I will research the 16 valve, but i need a list of what it will take to make it happen please.
 
And don't ignore a 1.6 8v either if you find the motor. The swap is basically the same if you keep it efi. My dad has an 8V and it seems to have more bottom end torque where mine has more top end.

I've heard that from someone else before too. I would love to see the torque and hp curves for both motors. I'll I know is the peak hp numbers:

1.3 carb - 58hp
1.6 8v - 80hp
1.6 16v - 95hp
