I am working on my 86 k20. I am going to be using it to tow once I finish with all the repairs. It has a stock carb 350 in it. I am wanting to put a whole new exhaust on it because it doesn't have much of one now and I can't stand the loudness. I plan to put the headers on and then carry it to the muffler shop to have the exhaust run. Do I need to get an H pipe for it. what is a good size pipe I was thinking 2.5 all the way back. But anyway about the headers with my application do I need a larger primary header tubes or is smaller better. I know the thin flange headers on it now warped so I know I want the thick 3/8 flange ones to go on it. and the finish and material is the next issue. I know stainless is best but haven't found any for less than $699. So how does the ceramic coating hold up. And also is a long tube or shorty better. Thanks for your input and if you can think of something I have forgot please feel free to bring it to my attention.

Thanks for the help:beer:

if the engine is stock what is wrong with the stock manifolds? they should flow just fine for your application plus you dont have to worry about heat or gaskets blowing all the time.

Well I do like the sound better with headers and I figured the stock manifold was alot more restrictive. And my friend has a set on his c10 that don't leak and they have been on it since he bought the truck about 2 years ago. I guess I might look into some manifolds.

Long race car headers are the best....... With no additional exhaust they sound awesome.

Ceramic dissipates heat better and looks better much longer.

Shorty headers are usually meant to be bolted up without having to do any major modifications to the existing exhaust/anything else under the hood.

Headers will flow better, but your usually don't need them unless you run the engine at a higher RPM. If you're turning 3500+ rpms, you will benefit.

If you already have an H Pipe then yes it would be easier to replace it, If not and you do add one it will add a similar benefit as headers. It will sound good... Also if not you need 2 of everything Cat, muffs, hangars, etc.

2.5 exhaust sounds about right.

Unless you turn some RPMs, it's not really worth the extra coin.
