would it be cheaper to try and find a half decent D60 with minimal replacements for around 1000 give or take a couple hundred, or to go and buy a D60 housing and then going and find parts for the axle, i would like a D60 from a f-250 or 350, 77.5-79(erik...) but if i can find the individual parts and fix 'em up and put them together myself, is it cheaper, or is it so much work its not worth it?

If you are going to be putting in lockers, gears, hi-steer, Crane or Dedenbear knuckles, alloy shafts, and warn or similar hubs, go for the housing. Otherwise just do the math piece by piece and figure out what you need.

Trying to piece one together will empty your wallet. I tried doing that for my D70/D60 rear steer axle. I finally gave up and found a decent D60 for the donor steering parts. I came out much, much cheaper.

If you plan on putting Dedenbear/Crane parts on it as well as chromo parts from the start, then it may be cheaper to buy parts.
