Want to put a twin stick in my xj. its an 89 with auto (not sure which one) with a np231j. Not sure what would be my best option on doing a twin stick t-case. I got 1 tons with spools f/r on 40"s. Went to leonard farms this past weekend and I realized this thing is a bear to turn in the woods.

Swap in a dana 300 and twin stick it. 231 will be your weak link in your setup. Or add a doubler!

Do you know the spline output onyour tranny?

I've got a 300 already twin sticked and freshly rebuilt sitting in the garage looking for a home.

not sure on spline count. would the output shaft be same spline count as input? I had to remove the driveshaft on Saturday..:gitrdun:

IIRC 231's came in two spline counts. 21 and 23. If you have the higher spline count, you are good to go. The 300 will bolt right up. You will have to flip it, so best make sure that it is sealed good, or you'll have a lot of issues with leaking. you will also have to over fill the T case since it isn't designed to run upside down.
Other options would be to
keep the 300 in the stock position and change out the front 60 to a passenger drop 60
Buy an Atlas
Keep the 231(although it will be your weak link) and put a locker in front(recommended anyway you go about it)
