I can not, for the life of me, decipher what tire I want to put on my truck when the time comes. I'm currently rockin' some $225 Craigslist special BFG ATs. Not a bad tire and I don't feel bad about burning them down when the notion strikes me, however, the time to replace them is looming in the near future and I've reached an impass.

Truck is pictured to the left. Specs below, sorta. 99 Silverado 1500, SAS with tons, 6.0 swap, 5 speed, 4.10s to clear up the basics. I'm looking at a 35x12.50-17 or a 315/70-17 that's closer to 35" instead of 34". I'm not terribly concerned about noise, but I want them to last a while, not break the bank, and look good on my H2s. They also need to be able to keep the power planted to the ground.

My first thought was ProComp. I've wanted another set of X Terrains since my 40s got cut in a parking lot. (35x12.50-17) They look awesome, I loved the ones I had, but never got to wear a set out. I'm sure they get loud once they wear down.

Next choice was the Cooper AT3. (315/70-17, but 34.3" tall) Very cost efficient, great tread life, pretty deep tread.

BFG AT....too expensive, so that idea quickly passed.

ProComp also has a nice MT. Haven't heard much about them.

Back to Cooper, they have some very nice and more aggressive tread patterns. The ST and STT are pretty sweet. As you can see, I guess I'm leaning towards ProComp or Cooper as they're American made and (the last I heard), Cooper makes ProComp tires. That may have changed by now.

Anyway, sorry for the long winded post. I'm up for suggestions and personal experiences with any of those tires or others you may have come across. Price, tread life, traction, etc.

I went with mud grapplers, all the reviews stated they were noisy, only lasted around 30K, but rode good, were really cheap for the 285/70s size (measures just over 37" on a 12" wheel) and were a soft compound so the should hook up good?? I cant say for sure b/c as soon as I bolted two of them on I realized they upstaged the truck too much and took them off and started tearing it down to paint it, so I guess I am really no help at all!! but they look sweet!!

The only Nitto I would possibly run is the trail grappler. I don't like Nittos otherwise.

285/70 is a 33" tire.

I ran a set of Procomp MTs on my last dodge. They handled well on the street and werent terribly loud. I only got about 20k out of them, but they did well offroad.

The plus for BFG, even though i think they are overpriced, is you will get your 30-40k out of them.

Ive heard good things from the Cooper ST/STT tires but dont know anyone personally that has ran them.

DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 385/70 i am not used to the metric sizes haha sorry!!!

Trail Grappler leaves a little to be desired in the traction area, although they see to last quite a while, even on heavy diesel trucks. The "mud grappler" is like the thornbird of the Nitto family. At first you're like "Awwww yeah!" and ten minutes later you go "Aww :(". Kind like Fruit Stripe gum...you know, the one with the zebra on it? They're just loud and don't last. The tread blocks are horribly wide, hence the noise and quick wearing characteristics. I'd imagine they're kinda heavy too.

My supervisor has some 315/75-16 Cooper STs on a reg cab, SWR, F350 4x4. They're seemed to last him quite some time, even with the way he drives. I might have to check on some of them, STTs though.

I got 45k miles out of my nitto dune grapplers on my 99 quad cab cummins 4wd. Never had a problem planting the power to the ground unless it was in a muddy area, but for an all around dd 10ply tire that I regularly tow 15k lbs with that lasts that long and looks good doing it can't be bad.

But as far as bfg's go, I wouldn't get any even if they were half the price. They have never lasted on our work trucks or any other suv we put them on, never again will I waste my money on bfg tires of any kind.

All procomp's I've had seem to cut down pretty easy when in the rocks or offroad for that matter but maybe that's just me. I love the look of the STT's never ran them tho

I've never understood how so many people have had problems with BFGs. The ones that are on my truck now won't wear out. I mean, they're made by Michelin afterall. Doesn't get much better than Michelin!

Dependin on how much I can find them for, I'm kinda leaning towards the STT at the moment.

I have had 3 sets of xterrains wore 2 of them out in a 2500 and held up well and didn't get too loud. Around 40k. Also have had toyo mt but didn't get to run them long but liked them alot. Should also get around 40k. Also had a set of nitto mt and lasted around 40k. Like all the tires and would recommend them, but my favorite was the toyo. Those mileage statements are without abuse and keeping them rotated. Never went off road much so can't help you there. Good luck with your choice.

I've had great luck outta all my BFGs the last set I had Jason put on my LJ Rubicon have lasted nearly 70,000 miles....going next weekend back to Town and Country Tire in Hickory for a new set...just a little taller set.

im running falken wildpeak a/ts on my Z and love them, plus a 45,000 mile warranty, no complaints in the dirt or ride department either, plus they make them up to 37"

I've got the Michellin LTX AT2's (20") on my 2wd and they are well behaved on road and get me out of the wet grass and gravel (lol open diff) I purchased them for. Tread is lasting so damn long my issue is dry rot although I don't gloss them and treat them as good as they maybe should be.

x2. Im running the Wildpeak ATs on my cummins (306/70/16). They ride great, arent loud, do well in the dirt esp for a load range E. I havent put many miles on them, but they seem to be wearing well. Most of the larger sizes are load C/D.

I got mine from Brandon at Rides, he seemed to be able to get a good deal on them.

ive heard good things about the treadwear on toyo mud country's...i know you wanna go american but a buddy has gotten around 70k out of a set

When the time comes that I actually NEED a set, I'll probably get some prices and let that decide for me.

I liked my Cooper STTs I had on my Jimmy. They are American made, not bad expensive, look good, and seem to do pretty well on and off road! I was tempted to run them again on my Power Wagon but, found a good deal on MTRKs so, I picked up a set of them.
