Got a whistling noise on a 92 XJ with the 4.0. I replaced the head gasket a couple of months ago, and ever since theres been a high pitched whining noise. It only happens when there is no load on the motor(like sitting at a stoplight) once i get on the gas it goes away. I've checked all the vacuum lines, none are cracked, could it be the intake manifold? It only does it after the jeep has gotten warmed up. Any ideas?

while running and at idle, spray carb cleaner/brake cleaner around the intake and throttle body.( use the straw) if the the RPMs change, you have a vacuum leak in that area. could be a loose bolt, cracked fitting, blown out gasket, even a split hose. odds are it'll be intake or throttle body gasket

Vacuum is highest at idle, so this is why you hear it then.

The whistle goes whoo whoo.

my 4.0 did this exact thing, it was the thin sheetmetal intake exhaust gasket as blkvoodoo stated, the one i got from the dealer was thicker and softer, appears much higher quality than the stocker, and took care of the whistle

Part # maybe. Im not good with motors... well im not good with much.. only screwing shet up

yeah thats what my buddy a mechanic for city of durham said, it was most likely the intake gasket...so I should go get one at the dealer rather than advance or autozone?

i dont remember a part number, but as i recall it was about $14 and was completely different than the one that was on there, and dotn worry about terminology, i dont know a proper name for it either, i just asked for an intake gasket and he got the the right thing

im really not sure, but advance might carry that new type also, i never even checked there

the fix isnt that bad, the only hard part for me was holding the intake in place with the new gasket to start the bolts, but another set of hands would help with that
