Who tows with a 5.4??

yeah, they definitely came with 5.4's as the base engine. even in the limited model.

I have a 2000 Expedition with the 5.4 Tow Package, with the Factory Bags...

It tows my Wrangler great... As said its not a diesel

Daily I get 14-18 but usually around the 15-16 range.

Towing i am around 10-12mpg

I think a 5.4 Expedtion would be better because thats less vehicle the motor is pushing, and my 2000 has a solid rear axle.

Get the one with the 3rd row, and captains chairs, its a nice package

I have 154K on mine, with no issues, I have replaced a couple of coil packs and a heater core. that is it, since new.

I have an 03 Expedition that I tow my camper with. It has the 5.4 and IRS. I have only pulled my jeep once with it, and it did great for what it is. Much better than I expected. I agree about the reliability of the solid rear axle, but I have never pulled with anything that rode better pulling a trailer because there is no sway with the IRS like you get with leaf springs. We get 15-16 normal and around 9-10 towing. That being said, I would still rather pull with the 1st gen cummins I have access to.

My brother uses a 2002 F-250 5.4 4x4 as his DD/tow rig. About 10-11 mpg unloaded, 7-8 loaded. But it's on 37's.

A good friend of mine has a 2000 F-350 V-10 6spd. SRW. gets about the same mpg in both situations, but has alot more pulling power than the v-8 truck, although I've never had an issue dragging around a fullsize rig on 40's with either truck.

Both have had issues with the factory locking hub breaking, just something to keep in mind if you plan to actually use the 4wd. The Warn hubs hold up fine in most situations in them, and are a pretty small investment to not have to worry whether or not the front axle will stay engaged long enough to get the trailer out of a slick area.

For the record, I stand corrected on the 5.4L according to msn autos they did come with them!! 255hp is what they were rated in 2002..., not sure how well it will push that pig and it does reduce towing to 6200.

I would guess the Exped are MUCH cheaper for the same engine and certainly weigh less. That might be the cheaper combo?

I thought the only gas motor the excursion came with was the V10? We have a v10 excursion we use for towing horse trailers. It tows well but its aggrivating to drive because the steering is very tight. When the steering wheel moves the slightest bit the whole vehicle jerks. On the highway not towing the best mileage we have ever gotten is 12.6mpg.

again, they came with a GAS v8 5.4. no doubt about it, 100% gauranteed bet my life on it.:flipoff2:

Well i really appreciate all the info and opinions in this thread, but as luck may have it i believe i have called off the search for a tow rig for the time being. I will be moving next week, and need to see how much i feel like taking on a new payment after i pay the bills at the new place. I will keep this all in mind when the time comes.
