GPS
A couple of weeks ago a friend told me that someone she knew had
their car broken into while they were at a football game. Their car was
parked on the green which was adjacent to the football stadium and
specially allotted to football fans. Things stolen from the car included
a garage door remote control, some money and a GPS which had been
prominently mounted on the dashboard.

When the victims got home, they found that their house had been
ransacked and just about everything worth anything had been stolen.

The thieves had used the GPS to guide them to the house. They then
used the garage remote control to open the garage door and gain
entry to the house. The thieves knew the owners were at the football
game, they knew what time the game was scheduled to finish and so
they knew how much time they had to clean out the house. It would
appear that they had brought a truck to empty the house of its contents.

Something to consider if you have a GPS - don't put your home
address in it. Put a nearby address (like a store or gas station) so you
can still find your way home if you need to, but no one else would know
where you live if your GPS were stolen.

While at work, I take my garage door opener in my lunch bag.

Some people are bad about parking in their driveway while leaving the garage door opener in plain sight.

It's sad to think folks can't just leave everything unlocked anymore. But it's what society has come to. That said, how naive do you have to be to leave anything valuable unattended, much less in plain sight these days.

If the can't find your GPS, they can always grab your registration/insurance card to get your home address.

A buddy of mine used to mention thsi all the time, so to keep his reg. secure he kept it in his wallet.

...up until he lost his wallet (luckily, not directly stolen, left on a counter), and suddenly found himself up Sh#t's Creek b/c he now owned 3 cars and 0 registration.

Moral to this story:
Don't actually leave your car. Anywhere. Ever. And don't leave the house either. You'll be safer that way.

Truthfully - best policy is just a locking glovebox.

if you ever loose your registration....a trip to the dmv office and one dollar gets you a new registration card. for future reference.

Which is great... unless you get pulled over on the way over, w/o ID or registration... :driver:

Geeze man, that old saw has been floating around for years. Not saying that it's impossible, but it has definitely been circulating long enough to achieve urban legend status.

Kinda related. I have been parking my jeep in front of my garage door for the past year and a half w/ the winch remote hooked up. I got to thinking the other week that all some one would have to do is spool out enough line to attach the hook to my garage door handle then spool in a touch and bam my garage is open. Need less to say my remote isnt in the jeep anymore.
