WiFi Router Recommendation 2020 Edition

Without getting into a ton of details, Spectrum is a CLEC/ISP, they don't have to play by the same rules as telephone. Also, telephone is required to serve every residence, but didn't require internet. Cable basically serves who they want.

Well, internet is getting close to the importance of telephone. Those bastidages should have to play by the same rules.

We bought the best Netgear Wally World had on the shelf a few years ago. ( 5-6 maybe)
Still works better than the 2 year old junk Spectrum put in. ( and still going strong )
At the time we needed multi-user capability ... kids still here.
This supported up 132 connections.
That was enough even for 2 daughters.

I have the nighthawk and love it.
So as soon as I start bragging on something, it goes poof! Sunday morning, it appears our router bricked.... wasn't working right, so I checked the nighthawk app to see if there was un update and there was, so I updated it...during the update something happened and said there was an error and the router just shut off and when it turned back on, it appeared to be bricked. Tried downloading the update files via hardwired laptop, but would never work. So after a couple of hours, I started researching replacements and we ended up going with the eero mesh wifi router. I like the idea of being able to hook up multiple hubs to increase range, but so far, with the one router downstairs, it reaches every corner of the house and am getting constant download speeds of 115mbps + and it takes of a hell of a lot less space than the nighthawk did. So far, I am really happy with this thing. only time will tell.

Not saying that CableTV isnt... but Telephone gets paid alot of money by the govt to "connect everyone". I agree that some of the regulations need to be revisited. Also, the govt keeps putting out Rural Broadband Funding, which is a good idea... except they think that 5mbps is broadband.

So, can a point to point wireless bridge from their house to our house work?

If you're going to have a router at your house, I'd see if you can set your parents router up so that your router is in the DMZ. What that means is you assign an IP address to your router, then all traffic that goes through it is sent direct without any firewall/port blocking/etc at your parents house.

I haven't messed with the Ubiquiti bridge, but my guess is that it gets an IP address or two for the bridge devices themselves, but it's otherwise transparent from a traffic-routing standpoint.

The goal would be to get any port-forwarding rules, etc, on your local network so that you can control them from there. You'll also want different subnets for each network. If your parents' router assigns 192.168.1.x or 10.0.0.x, you want your router to assign 192.168.2.x, 10.0.1.x, etc. You can mess with the subnet masks, but it probably isn't necessary with the router in the middle.

Modem -> Parents' Router -> Wifi Bridge -> Local router -> local wired ethernet & wifi
