Will it warp or distort?

I have a piece of plate, 1/2 thick and about 2x3 feet. I want to drill it, maybe a 4" x 4" pattern. Some holes drilled to 1/2", some tapped 1/2-13 (because I don't want to tap 50 holes).

Plate is really darn flat as it is. Will the drilling induce or relieve stress enough to warp or distort the plate?

I will use a 1/2 annular cutter on the thru holes, a 27/64 twist on the tapped holes, both in a mag drill.

It most likely won't. I imagine it's hot rolled steel which has less induced stress than crs but can still move a little. You will usually see it bow if you were to face an entire side of it or cut a big channel across it.

When you weld it to your table legs is a different story though.

:edit: I would also consider a 6x6 pattern to make life easier and tap none of them assuming you are making a welding table.

It'll be fine. But you should make sure to do it with a dull drill bit and harbor freight taps just to make sure.

assuming you are making a welding table.

More of a fitup/jig table.

Picked up my new welding table today. Found it on CL. 60x65", 1-1/4 thick, 1400 pounds. Supposed to be blanchard ground both sides. It is flat, flat, flat either way. This was off some machine. Cost me about .15 a pound.

Perfect. We have a couple of almost exactly that at the shop with 5/8-11 on 6" centers. Just floats on a base, when it gets bad flip it over and when it gets real bad put it on the blanchard again.
My personal table is .5" top we put on a huge horizontal Mill and did half inch on 6" centers and I just use clamps like an acorn table that just slide in. That's a smoking deal on that one.
