I have a 2000 wran gler 4 cyl 5 speed. Got a hell of a deal on a 231j with a SYE but I'm wondering how much the yj to tj makes a difference. I'm assuming the 89 is the model year of the vehicle it came out of.

Depends if the 89 came from behind an auto or manual.
Auto will be 23 spline and manual transmission equipped Jeeps in 89 we're 21 spline.
Yours will be 21 spline in your 4 cyl TJ.

I was told it came from a manual. I guess there's only one way to find out I didn't know if there was any variation in shaft lengths or what be it.

But most likely a 21 spline will mate up to another 21 spline?

If not, Jody can I drop both off at your shop and you put the SYE onto my 99 case and rebuild?

94 and below are the same pitch iirc
Correct. up until 94 1/2 I believe. Then you only have to check input shaft length.

Yup

Can you elaborate a little so a 99 231j would have a deeper input shaft slot so to speak than a 89 231j.

The 231 in the J had both long and short input shafts. Can you post pictures of that 231's input shaft?

generally, from what i have researched if you are not putting the input gear in a different series case, then the length shouldnt be an issue. For example, in my case because one 231 series case was behind Trans A (short input) and another 231 series case is behind Trans B (long input), me transferring the the long input to my Trans A case will allow me to use the Trans B - length will be correct because the mating face fo the tcase did not change.

The issue I believe with the long vs short input is with the transmission rear seal. A short input will cause a transmission designed for the long input to leak between the transmission and transfercase. Of course I could be wrong on all this.

I measured both seemed to be identical

Ok so now I'm about certain the 89 was off a ax-5, the same transmission that I have in my 2000

Bolt it up then. They both look to be 21 spline. You can tell by the thickness in pictures. I was looking more for a down shot to see the length. If both measure the same and have the same 21 splines bolt that biatch up.

Looks good, bolt that sucker in and send it!

Bolt it in but what @ghost said about the mating to the transmission seal in regards to short or long is correct. The lengths are different and therefore the corresponding seal on the different transmissions are different. Short snout Tcase in the back of a trans made for long will leak. Long snout in the back of a trans made for short more than likely won’t seat all the way. It won’t necessarily leak but if the splines don’t seat all the way and you tighten the tcase to the trans it will put forward pressure on the trans output shaft and cause problems.
