Winch… Warn or ARB

My XD9000 housing broke when my “friends” were not paying attention when I had a long pull. It’s one of the oldest models.

To change out the housing and get a new control pack to bring it up to date I’m looking at roughly 1k.

Doesn’t seem like a wise choice. A new one is just over 2k but I intend to swap to a rope and ditch a cable. If I buy the next model Warn with rope I’m over 2.5k.

I need the low profile style so I can remove the control pack to package in the bumper.

It looks like ARB is in the winch game now. Any experiences with them? A 10k ARB with rope is a tad over 1k and appears to be semi self contained and low profile. I think it would work. But I don’t want to spend less to get crap.

Yep, as much as I want to not support the cheap Chinese crap, buying a Warn is mostly doing the same thing. Might as well spend $500 or less at Harbor Freight.
 
As someone who just overhauled/rebuilt their 17yr old m8000, I would just rebuild what ya got. I found a similar looking winch contactor in the surplus center catalogue for like half of what I paid for a warn one if you are looking at saving money.

I’m not scared to spend the money once. Honestly this might be the cheapest part of my build aside from tabs and stuff. Cry now as opposed to cry later. I get the HF angle and it’s probably gonna TON weight.

Being towards the end of a major expense for me, I just don’t want to compromise on the winch. I’m ok compromising in the rope for some reason.

I’ve been burned by lesser winches before and while it’s very possible new stuff suck more than old stuff in the same flavor… I just don’t want to do this twice. .
 
Yes, you could buy a new HF winch, and probably be fine. I’ve run 3 or 4 different brands of winches and generally not had any significant problems. I currently use only warn. And the last 6 or 7 I’ve had have been warn. At times I’ve run other brands and thought to myself “man, I wish I had a warn”. I’ve never used a warn and thought “man, I wish I had a HF winch.” In my experience, warn is consistently strong and reliable. I would suggest looking for a good used warn on marketplace.

Always wanted one. My front is very compact and low profile. Only way I’ll run one is if I end up having to chop it the exo and redo everything to allow it to flex fully.

I have a Warn Zeon 10 s and it says it was designed, engineered and assembled in the USA. I have never used it because its on my MJ and it never moves. I have HF APEX 12,000 S on both my old ram 2500 and my JKU and have used them several times and have been happy with them. I bought them when they were on sale for under 400 both times.
 
I have an 8274-50 (FS) if you are looking to go that route. That being said, I would have a real hard time putting a HF crap on a rig. Find a good used Warn and rebuild as necessary
 
I am on a trip right now and some of the guys are running Carbon winches. I am very impressed, it's like 8274 speed but without coasting forever after you release the button. The motor is very long though, quite a bit longer than most.
 
Something like one of these might work for you...although your truck is pretty big, and getting heavier every time you touch it, lol. It's probably worth staying in the 9k to 10k capacity range. I *think* (but am not positive) when you step up to 12k, you might be in the "large frame" category of winches, which may or may not fit.

You should be able to convert either of these to use the newer style contactor/solenoid pack. I have a cheapo amazon contactor on mine. It's been used on 2 different rigs and 2 different winches, and I haven't had any complaints with it.

If you want/need something more compact, (and you aren't scared to spend some jack) you could go with a 9.0RC. I have one on my buggy, and it is a great winch. Pulls hard and much quicker than any other winch I've owned. But they only hold about 50' of rope, and come with a hefty price tag. I don't see many of them go up for sale used.

Some other potential options below. I don't know anything about these winches specifically. But I do know that this guy/company is pretty rooted in the offroad community out west. The 10.0 Competition unit looks like it's intended to compete with the Warn 9.0RC. I haven't compared any specs between them. But at less than 1/2 the price of a 9.0RC, it might be worth giving it a shot.
