winch application guide

if you winch with the vehicle in park, i don't wanna be anywhere near it. Ever see a parking pawl? They're tiny.

Throw that fawker in neutral and stand on the brakes and e-brake (if ya have one)

I haven't done much winching, this one eludes me. Care to elaborate why not to winch in Park and What is a Parking Pawl?

Okay, what's a disco switch?

I doubt you'll find any switch that is semi-affordable that's rated for 450 amps continuous... the big disconnect plugs, however...hmmm.... good idea.

The parking pawl is the small piece inside an auto tranny that holds the vehicle from rolling when in park, and it's smaller than my pinkie. My tranny builder showed it to me. I don't rely on park in my CTD anymore. e-brake first, then shift to neutral, let off foot brake, then shift to park...no tension on the park mechanism.

I think - he really means don't rely on park alone to hold it.
I can't think of a reason not to have it in park, but would definately not count on park holding. Use brakes, blocks, chocks anything else to hold it.

The parking pawl is a lot like the steering wheel lock plate and pin in both design and size.

Not much to hold it. But then again, we know how much a craftsmen screwdriver through the front DS yoke will hold.

OUCH.

Also a good reason to get a monster sized master disco switch and running *everything* through it... That would be spooky having a fast winch get fused in the "on" position.

We talked about a disco that afternoon. It was a very frank conversation, and it ended with both of us asking ourselves "where do you stop"? Do you put a disco on the starter too? A kill switch for the engine besides the key? Do you plumb a fire suppression system into the engine compartment? I agree with Bill that I don't like the idea of disconnecting everything all at once either. Like always, there isn't a good all purpose every-time correct answer. You have to do what's best for you and safest within your budget. For Ricky it was to replace a questionable winch with a new one.

It's hard to believe it holds what it does. I saw mine when I rebuilt my THM-400 and could hardly believe that it had been holding a car for 30 sum odd years...

Hell, I'm scared that if I put too much pressure on it, it might brake. I know they release when you put too much on them, but still, it can't be a good thing.

...Just one large switch for everything. Leaking fuel rail spraying gas on the headers? Cut the switch off and it kills the pump. Runaway winch? Cut the switch off. Starter stuck? Cut off the switch. If you're having a major problem or smoke coming from under the hood...yes, cut off everything...you're not going to have time to know or care what is causing the problem. It's not like they're some sort of exotic high end race-only item. SFI requires pretty much any vehicle that they spec rules for to have one.

Rich.. http://www.overtons.com/modperl/overtons/detail/pdetail2.cgi?r=detail_view&item_num=70446

350 continuous, 600 for 5 minute intervals and 1600 peak... $19.99

I could do that for my rig, it's old school.
But would that fry a computer system?
I asked a teck about it once and he said NEVER unhook a running vehicle from the battery, it will damage the computer system. That of course was concerning a newer vehicle.

edit- are you running one of these?

2nd edit- Battery Switches

3rd edit- I'm running dual optimas, and I have a winch that will use all of them. How many amps continous will my switch need to be, for one of those loooooooong pulls + electric rear steer and a taurus fan.

rich i would trust my parking pawl to hold the vehicle any day. its like pinion brakes on a rockwell, you have a mechanical advantage. and i know that "tiny" pawl will hold, the one in my th350 is bigger than my thumb and about 3/8ths thick. thats basically like saying i dont trust my brake lines cause they are only 1/4" diameter

how did this post get from which winch to where it's at now?
this is good tech about the disco's though
the question which has been asked and answered several times over with every opinion there is was about which winch?

maybe a new post about which disoc switch and how to's should be posted.

to keep things on track.
here I will do it?
