Was the cable layered okay? Looks like the bottom of your winch plate is pretty rashed from the cable. That bind on the drum could have forced the housing to bust.

The cable was layered ok. It was a few months ago when I pulled a truck out of the mud where it balled up pretty bad. I think I busted a bolt and then the winch housing exploded.

I broke steel cable on an 8,000 lb winch pulling a 3,000 lb rig. I was wedged under an undercut ledge and pulling just made it worse. Ended up having to get another rig in a location they could lift and pull.

Luckily the only failure I have been around was on a winch rope. It just fell to the ground. Tied a bowline in it just to keep going. I think that knot is still in place on DAWGTOY's winch.

If it balled up enough to take the paint off the bumper, there's nothing to say that it didn't put enough pressure on the spreader bolts to bend them or crack the housing. At that point, its just a matter of time.

I mean, I'll talk shit about cheap winches all day long. But this looks more like abuse.

Hell the only time I really put it under any pressure I was pulling a guy out of the mud and I was sitting at an angle and it wound up all on one side so I had to keep stopping and pulling it out and fixing it. I'm fairly new to winches how do you get your winch to feed evenly because mine never has with out me doing to for it

Wire rope winch cables are nothing to screw with, I have seen a man die from one, don't ever take them too lightly. Its simple, don't stand next to it or behind , use you winch blanket while wiching, it is like being sliced by a weedeater.

Broke a cable on a Warn Power Plant winch trying to pull up a power pole guy wire anchor. Spent some money on a good rope and never had another problem.

The failure I'm seeing is improper use. The cable became bound on the cross supports, which broke them out. After they let go, there was no remaining structure to keep it from grenading.

X2 here....... The cable should have been pulled out fully and rewound. Checking for damage to the cable and drum. I haven't wheeled in a while but after every trip if my winch was used I did this. I'm sure the pot metal housing didn't help either.

The cross supports are still intact it's the housing that gave way and looking at it I believe a bolt broke on the base which made the base of the winch break on the same side and that allowed the winch to twist and break the rest of the housing... I can't imagine spending $1,200 on a good warn winch I think I'll stick with cheap ones and try to be a little safer

I would say this was most likely your problem, not trying to be an ass but I have seen alot of cheap winches shit the bed

^ trust this mans opinion. he is wearing lace up shoes and not crocs/flippys in his sig pic. that's a MAN for ya.

When you are deep in the woods wheeling and an hour away from civilization, You don't want to be depending on a cheap winch. Just saying.

Don't wheel alone, and make sure your buddy has a winch ;).

I bought an XRC8 when they first came out (on display of new products at the Atlanta 4WP show, probably 2007ish). It lived in a reciever cradle for a few years, then went on my Samurai in '09, and was still on it when sold earlier this year. (With rope now because that was the cable I broke) It was used hard and never gave any trouble, although it was the slowest winch in history. Granted, it stayed out of the weather which helps a lot.

I put an Engo 10k on my LJ and it was fine too, but I stepped up to a Warn 9500ti for the line speed. Brake quit working on the Warn...

Am I the only one who keeps clicking on this thread to see the sale prices on winches?

If youre patient, you will find a good deal on a used winch on here. IIRC, I paid $400 for my Warn M8000.

I agree here. I have purchased three used Warns over the years. A nice 8274 for $650 with synthetic line, a nice older 8274 off Craigslist for $425 with a cradle, and an M8000 off of here for $325 complete. None of them has let me down other than the original solenoids on the first 8274 working intermittently. Granted I also do not use them that much but when I do they are there for me.

I heard about Robbie Moseley (SP??) winching his CJ up against a square edge rock ledge while talking. The side gears on his 8274 exploded. My winch mount for him held though!:D

8274 for the win
