winch cable or rope?

Quick and easy to splice back together with no tools if it does break.
I think this aspect is quite underrated. Yes, you can do that with cable and some crosby clamps, but it's a weak link and added inertia when it breaks again.

Can't push a rope.

Oh wait but how often do you use a wench for that.

Oh wait....

They told me rope when I asked. I went rope.

Be sure it’s Dyneema, not knock off.

I bought the knockoff and it was great for me. Put it thru the paces for sure. But certainly can’t argue with buying quality.

while on the topic, whats the rules on rope strength rating vs the wench?
Bc not all of us have strong wenches.

Which do you want to break first? The wench or its rope :D

Well some of the Amazon off brand ropes claim Dyneema (it’s a type of fiber) and that’s what mine was. I just read the reviews til I found one that was glowing from folks that actually used them.

Some had plenty of “don’t buy this, it’s junk” reviews.

My first rope was Amazon Ranger branded Dyneema rope that I put on a 9K HF winch. Not sure if it really was actual Dyneema but it looked and felt like most of the Dyneema rope I have seen and I put it thru hell multiple times. It's now worn some and has some fraying on the outer jacket in places but it hasn't failed. I spliced a loop in it and I'm using it for other high stress loads when necessary.

Also your winch monkey will be grateful if you buy rope over cable. I rather pull rope all day rather than cable. Also rope does not bind up nearly as bad as cable does. Im in the market of replacing the rope on my winch because it is worn out.

Here is a link to what I bought. My new rig has a rope that’s seen better days, so I’ll actually be replacing it soon and will most likely buy this again.

Mophorn Synthetic Winch Rope 3/8 Inch x 82Ft Synthetic Winch Cable 18000LBS Breaking Strength Winch Line Cable Rope with Sheath (Black,3/8 Inch x 82Ft) Amazon product ASIN B07K8MWP7S

If you go synthetic, make sure you get a new snatch block not to be confused with a 🐔block, if you use your old snatch the burs will cut the fibers and you'll have premature failure. Same goes with the hawse/fairlead.
So, you're saying if you got a new winch don't play around with the old snatch or you might get cut off?

Sounds like solid advice..

Why are y’all even talking rope v cable? I went Bluetooth!
Turn on the winch, turn on the hook, make sure they’re connected through the app and voila!

I went with rope a long time ago. after 6 years it finally broke. I tied a knot in it and finished the weekend. Then ordered another rope. The ones I have bought were $70ish something, and came with a nice hook as well. Fairleads for wire rope is usually steel or cast, so an aluminum is needed. But if ordering a new one, it should come with a new aluminum one. As far as your snatch block, it's easy enough to take some 400 or so sand paper and knock down any burrs, then finish it up with some steel wool.

I bought a new snatch block when I bought my rope….but has anyone used those little discs instead? Or the shackles made of rope?

Yes and yes. Soft shackles are awesome. I picked up one of the disk snatch blocks a while back and used it for the first time a couple weeks ago. I pulled a junk car on the trailer with jeep off to the side and the pulley on one of the front trailer hooks. Worked perfectly.

Yes. Soft shackle is what they are called. They’re amazing. Got a couple in my Jeep and haven’t used a D ring in a while.
Only been around the disc thing once, it did what it was supposed to and we were able to toss it and the soft shackle around to folks as need easily and safely
