Learned my lesson today. Spooling up my old winch with some new rope and the solenoid stuck. Luckily I had about twenty feet left and had time to get the power disconnected. First time that's happened to me. Will hit Amazon this evening and order a couple of disconnects.

I used one of these off Amazon. Worked great!

What about a single (simple) "arming" switch vs. disconnect?
Thinking that thru, even disarmed, it could still allow the solenoids to stay latched/locked/welded contacts (that's happened on my homebrew FoMoCo relay setup on the trailer)

You'd be correct.

The other remote option is a constant duty high amp solenoid that could kill power to the winch if youdidn't want a big disconnect somewhere.

i have used the anderson plugs for years on a 12k winch, right beside the winch (easy to reach if needed). even put a plug on one end of my jumper cables so i don't have to open the hood to use them.

Ive seen some after math of a runaway winch. and I still havent done this. Ordered one
