Ok, so I've never tore into a winch before, so bear with me here...

Ramsey REP8000

I got this winch used, and it was in 3 parts... Drum, motor and planetaries... I decided to tear it apart and clean out the swamp water/grease mixture in the planetaries.. Got it all back together and it spins freely by hand...

Decided to tear open the motor, check the brushes, etc... Cleaned it all up and it works just fine...

Now, I'm pretty sure that I did all of that just fine... Heres the issue...

Inside the drum is an Allen Shaped driveshaft that I am assuming delivers power from the motor to the planetaries... It fits up with 2 triangular drive gears, then a spring pack that looks like it gets sandwiched between 2 parts that press into the drum... Is this shaft supposed to spin freely? I cannot get the thing to move, and it appears that the press fit into the drum is not letting the springs move properly... This would make a direct drive from the motor to the drum and im pretty sure thats not the way it works :)

So, how freely should that driveline spin inside the drum... Should the springs and drive gears spin seperate of the 2 clamshell pieces that go between the drum and shaft?

I think you're trying to turn the shaft against the brake? The brake is inside the drum.

winch fix

yeah, the two brake shoes go around the springs and inside the drum. the Ramsey website parts diagrams that you can print and they are pretty good.

I just had to replace the brake assembly on mine (broke)...Ramsey was great to deal with and got me the part in less than a week.
