I'm in the process of mounting a winch (Smittybuilt XRC8) in the rear of my Nissan.
My rear bumper that I want to mount to is 8" C-channel that 0.25" thick.
I'd like to keep it as simple as possible and I've got two ideas...

I'm personally leaning to the vertical mount due to simplicity, but don't want to bind or kink the winch cable...any ideas/suggestions/opinions?

Why would it bend or kink the cable? If you set it up right, it will spool off just like if it was mounted horizontally, only it's spooling through the bottom.

Mine is mounted vertically and it spools off the bottom. Probably too much leverage if it spooled off the top.

I think vertical spooled off the top would be fine Because either way (spooled from top or bottom) the same force would be applied to the opposite bolts but the second or horizontally mounted setup if you spool of the top there would be more force on those rear bolts than if you spooled off the bottom not to mention more work to just set it up.

So in short I vote for number 1.

I guess I should have mentioned it earlier, but the reason I want the cable to come out from the top are so the hawse fairlead (can't use a roller fairlead) is up higher and doesn't get beat up when I drop off ledges and so that the winch control can be accessed from under the bed if my in-cab controls die on me (basically the control plug from the winch will be pointing down).
