In the market for a winch, what are some good options? Looking to stay in the 8-9.5k range.

Mile marker decent?

smittybuilt with synthetic line, are about the best quality for the buck.
I tend to agree here. I would have bought the X20 10k had I not found a Warn 9.5cti for $400 on FB Marketplace.

Mile Marker is decent, Smittybuilt aint bad. Superwinch would be my go to but since they just got bought out I would be leary of them.

The question I’ve always had, but can’t find the answer to is, is there a ‘bigger’ 8274. Obvious advantages are line speed and reliability. Sure you can upgrade motors, get creative with pulley blocks, go 24v, etc. with the 8274...but is there a 10/12/15k winch comparable/similar to the 8274?

M12 and M15, but they're a lot slower. The M8274 pulls faster at full pull on a double line than either the M12 or M15 does single-line.

Regardless, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the "non-VR" line Warn winches, even the old M8000, HS9500, etc, were good units.

Same stock on shelves as before they got bought, until all those units are sold.. not sure how long ago said buy out was.

More so worried about replacement parts with the buy out. They shut down the us plant after the buyout happened. Probably about a month ago I think.

I’d go Warn all day long. For an 8K winch the tried and true M8000 is hard to beat. As mentioned earlier I’d stay away from their VR series.

I run their 9.5 XP on the LJ and couldn’t be happier. It’s a hoss for a 9.5

When I was looking around, you could find Warn XD9000(i)'s all day long on CL and FB Marketplace.

Has anyone tried the TSC Travelers? They look kinda Smitty to me.

we threw one on a buddies full size chevy rig. it works, its slow as piss but works he hasnt had it long enough to tell how it will hold up. personally i dont think they are worth it you can get other brands for a small amount more that are faster, but they are convenient to get on the way to a wheeling trip and wire in, in the parking lot so thats what hes got.

TSC Traveller, Harbor Freight etc are all slow but functional. Open up the control box and seal it well with some silicone to help longevity of the sparky bits. I may be the lone person on this thread that doesn't give a shit about winch speed. Really, is winch speed an issue when people tend to ride 20 min then stop to bullshit for an hour?

Obviously you got your feelings hurt at the winch race. Tell it to a winch race champion.

I'll throw in on the 8274. I've got one. I weigh probable close to 6k. I've had some pretty tough pulls with mine wedged in rocks and it's yet to let me down. At times I thought the line would snap but didn't. I think people overestimate what they need.

I’ve bogged my 9500ti down to where it wouldn’t pull anymore when @ord.sgt.26NC bet some kid he couldn’t make it through a mud hole. I’ve been on the receiving end of a 8274 when popped a sector shaft in Cali and it was a long uphill pull unassisted and it made quick work of it. One day I plan on investing in an 8274 for the k5 and my JK.

I have one on my Cherokee. Slow as @Loganwayne in the line at Golden Corral. But works just fine.
For the $$$ and infrequency of use for me, I like it.
I've been known to go into a Ryans, pay at the door, eat so much food I got BACK in line and paid AGAIN.
On a serious note I've asked about how many people actually buy the travelers, and the sales associate told me it's done quite well so far, from a sales point at least. Didn't ask about returns or warranties and I probably should. I don't know if I would put it on my primary trail rig or not but I think for a typical 4 wheel drive daily driven pickup truck or tow rig I might try it out.
