Winches....

I’ve bogged my 9500ti down to where it wouldn’t pull anymore when @ord.sgt.26NC bet some kid he couldn’t make it through a mud hole. I’ve been on the receiving end of a 8274 when popped a sector shaft in Cali and it was a long uphill pull unassisted and it made quick work of it. One day I plan on investing in an 8274 for the k5 and my JK.
There's a guy in town that has an old F150 shitbox with an 8274 on it. I've thought about asking how much he wanted for it (the whole truck) just to get the winch. I'd probably flip the truck or crush it just to break even.

I’d buy harbor freight before buying another warn.

The poor longevity of a 9.5 ti left me salty. With that said I could buy 3 HF to one warn.

Sure the 8274 is faster but typically I only need to pull for 10’ at a time at the most.

If I were racing or competing I’d buy a gigglepin 8274.

I currently use an old Ramsey 8000. Bare bones and has already lasted longer than the 9.5ti, with more pulls Paid $200 for it used.

I can't speak to the new Warn winches but I will say this. I was on a trail with a guy that had one of those Badlands winches. No joke, it took him 20 mins to pull one hill and that's being conservative. Sometimes spending a little more money is worth it.

I have an old Warn M8000 replaced the motor with an ebay unit I think it was. Maybe Surplus center. I did not like how it sounded and worked so when I could I sent it to Clemson 4x4 (a warn service center) and had them completely go through it and replace the motor. $300 later it lasted 2 years and the motor quit working. I contacted Warn about it and they said the motor on had a 1 year warranty or something like that. I pulled the motor and found that the internal winds had disconnected from the post. I had a friend here look at it to see if it could be reattached and they could not do it. I've currently got a Smitty x20 10K on my jeep and been very happy with it for 2 years now.

It doesn't matter how good your winch is when the poor connection on the frame makes it not work. Run some dedicated, heavy gauge cables for hot and ground straight to the battery.

This times a million. Before I even unboxed my shitty VR warn winch I went to the welding supply and grabbed some over kill sized cable and copper lugs. For that matter I redid all of my recharging/batter electrical at the same time.

Haha good advice.

And it doesn’t matter how good your cables are when the motor craps out early haha. But once and done and it’s easy to replace the winch with good cables.

I think people overestimate what they need.

I guess that depends on what side of the fence you fall on for 'better to have and not need, than need and not have'. But seriously, I was always under the impression that duration of load was a killer, winches not being an exception. So with the age old 1.5x loaded weight, an 8k winch would be perfect for a 5500lb loaded rig...but would it not be safe to assume winch longevity increases if it were 12k winch due to load capability? As I noted previously, of course you can get creative with pulley blocks, but you can do that with any winch making it moot. So then it becomes a question of prioritizing speed or pulling power/longevity?

Speed. Definitely speed.
