Windrock vs. black mtn. opinions wanted

Planning on a trip this coming weekend, and cant decide between the parks.

Will be willing my xj on 33s.

Not really sure which park would suit my rig the best, as all the info I find on the trails pertains to "big" tired rigs.

Obviously, I have never visited either, and would very much appreciate any input yall have.
 
I want to thank both of yall for the info.
Windrock is the direction I was leaning for trails my truck could ride.

Also, does anyone know if you can camp on the trails at either place? Not a big fan of camp grounds. Thanks!!!

Windrock you have to stay at there campground. It's the nicest of all the wheeling spots on the east coast.
 
Windrock was full at the camp ground last week FYI I would say there both tit for tat if you want to go actually wheeling if you want to go drive gravel roads windrock is better for that I would not suggest camping on the trails in either even if it’s allowed

I always here people say this but I have been going with pretty good size groups for like 10 years a few times a year and I have camped at every camp ground they have and never had any issues

Thanks again for the input. Looks like the campground at windrock is all booked up for next weekend, and I would rather not get robbed at harlan, so no clue what to do.....

Try surrounding campgrounds. There's also Indian Creek I believe.

edit: I just Googled Oliver Springs, TN campgrounds and got 5 results. I didn't expand the search but there's more than just Windrock's campground.
 
I've never had anything but a great time in Harlan. Camped all over and left my stuff. I would put my important stuff in the tow rig and lock it before heading out. But again never an issue.

I'd got to Harlan. Lots of trail riding and if you do your research you can have a blast on 33s if you are locked and have a winch.

But if it's just your rig...go to URE. You need backup on the trails if something happens to the rig. I walked for several hours once when the guy I was riding with ran out if gas...

I really do appreciate the info. I think I will hold off on harlan untill I have a hard sided camper, which would be a little less likely to be broken into when left for the day.

Everything I could find about harlan was more geared toward the larger trucks. My heep is locked, and has a winch, but it just being me makes me hesitant to ride those trails for the first time.

Unfortunately it looks like my lack of planning means another trip to URE.

At least there I am guaranteed to not break anything.........

Again, a big thanks goes out for the info, and it will be used for my next trip!

Yeah, the campground is nice. On one ride there I took with Mid Carolina Jeepers I had a fold-out cot laid out next to my Jeep and some kind of Cypress looking bush thing. I layed down and around 3 in the morning and woke up to the sound of at least two skunks going to town on a bag of Cool ranch Doritos right up underneath me. It was one of those situations where it's like what the heck do I do? I'm pretty sure as bad as I smelled on day 3 out of a 4-day wheeling trip, a squirt or two of "Eau de Skunk" may have been an improvement. :lol: That trip in particular we stayed Thursday night in Harmon den just to split the trip up. I was in a posse of about seven rigs all being driven from Columbia area. It's still probably one of the funnest trips I've ever been on. At the time I had a half ton axled, caged XJ, locked front and rear on 35s. Group ranged anywhere from mildly built TJs on 33 inch all-terrain all the way up to 1 ton JK's on 40s. Me, @01tj (back then 4cyl and 37 blues) and Gillis Coleman got the crazy idea to try baby Rattle Rock which ended up splitting us up from our group and it took probably about eight hours to track everyone back down. :D

I think that was the trip I followed you guys through baby Rattle Rock. Can remember if I was still on 33s or had gone to 35s. I just remember Gillis being on the spotters rope to keep me from tipping and not sure why the smallest guy there was my anchor...

You were totally there too. I had almost forgotten. And back then was when Greg Wolfe had first gotten into wheeling and IIRC, still on 31s, unless that was Bumpus cove.
Damn I miss them days.

Thats right, you did too. @Steve97TJ was riding with me on that trip.
