I'm putting on a relocation bracket (94 YJ) where my windshield hinges sit and i started to unscrew the bolts when it just kept turning. i'm curious as to whether there is a nut on the other side of the hinge or should i just be able to take the hinge out by unscrewing all the bolts?

I am not 100% on this, hopefully someone else will jump in, but I believe something is stripped. (In other word, no there is not a "nut" on the other side you can get ahold of)

The "nut" in this case is made into the windshield frame, it is possible it has broken off and is just turning now. If you didnt before...PB Blaster all them first to give yourself a better chance of them coming out. Let it soak....

Not sure why you are taking this off, but assuming there is some major reason...it is possible you are going to have to drill out the first bolt, etc.

If all this is to simply replace with blinging shiny ones instead, I would say stop now. They have been in there for at least 11+ years at this point and in your case they don't sound like they are coming out ez. Better off to stop/leave the ones in there. (May want to "fix" this one bolt though...)

There is a "blind" nut on the back side and it is common to have their old weld "pop" and turn as yours is. About All you can do is cut it off, get the windshield dropped and then un-bold the dash ( like you would to install new front speakers) and get it that way, then weld a new nut back in......At least that's what I found when trying to replace my front speakers. My welds were ok and i never seized he threads when I put it all back so I wouldn't have that problem again. I hope i helped and didn't hurt. I have yet to figure out why Jeep even uses those stupid Torx head bolts that ALWAYS strip out!!

I'm doing it because i bought relocation brackets and they mount to two bolts of the windshield hinges. I really was not hoping/expecting Jeep to but the nuts behind the dash but I guess they are.

Is getting to these nuts a $#%@? Let me know what I need to do.

Thanks.

if its hinge to tub then there are nuts under the tub sealant goop. no joy.... but very doable.

if its hinge to windshield frame then you have to drill em out.

If Im not mistaken if its the top holes (in the glass frame) you are going to have to use a hole saw and drill an access hole in your channel...

The lower holes are doable, a PITA but doable...

They are the lower holes. So these are to the tub. Doable - but how?? Do I need to un bolt the windshield and dash bracket on the inside? Do I have to get behind these damn bolts?

on the inside of your tub there is some seam sealer. just clean that out and you will see the nuts. I dont recomend fawking with it if you dont have to. its unlikely you will ever line everything up good again with aftermarket hinges. there is usually sealer under the hinges themselves too.

i tried to do the same thing for my old YJ a few years back. bought the brackets and ended up selling the brackets because i waisted 4 hours of my life trying to get those bolts out. i just said forget it.

I had a similar problem. If you remove part of the dash and screws around the speaker you can get your hand up to tighten or loosen them. Once I got all the old nuts off I replaced them with nuts with teflon in them so they would not loosen up again.

Yes. This was suppose to be a quick hour project but due to rust it took six hours. You will also have to take off the support for the windshield at the speaker to help make room as well.

I did not take out the PB but did loose quite a bit of skin forcing my hand up in that position. I had one person turn the bolt while I held the new nut in place.
