Winston Pull-a-part or other ideas

I need a bumper for a car my wife recently remodeled. Is the winston pull-a-part safe or do I take my life into my hands going in there. I read something about the Charlotte one on here a few months ago and it didn't sound too pleasant of an experience. Not sure if W-S is better or worse. I was there back last year and didn't feel that unsafe but hell, maybe I was just clueless to my surroundings.

I am a CCW holder but it seems stupid that I need to think about carrying when I'm going in to pull a $20 part. Is the world really gone that much to hell! Also technically paying admission to get in voids my CCW rights inside the joint so again no need to get in a heap of crap just to replace a bumper cover. I also don't want to be crawling around under junk with a pistol in my pocket - use your imagination of how that might play out. Frankly I would prefer not to be in any scenario on purpose where I really feel I need it

Also, any other suggestions on junkyards in central NC that I can go remove the parts myself to put my junk back together (within 75 miles of Burilington roughly)?

Was there a few weekends ago. Great place. Highly organized. They had a little tiny 20 something blond gal as one of the cashiers. Who knows, she might be mean as a snake, but seemed nice when I checked out. Get the VIP card. Your first yard fee ($2) is free and only $1 afterwards.

I have gone there a dozen plus times no issues. the one is charlotte you need to watch out for.

I have been there and didn't ffeel unsafe. There is also a pull your place in Greensboro off hwy 70 east. I can't remember the name of it.

I take dates there. We picnic on the trunks of big cars. It's romantic.

No, really. I haven't heard of anyone running into uncomfortable situations at that one. 109 is a scarier place by far.

W-S is(for now) the best kept secret in pull-your-own-parts yards around here. Although I'm sure that once the trash finds it, the honeymoon will be over.....

pullapart W-S rocks, best "junkyard" ever. The one over on the east end of GSO is probably GAPCO / Gate City Auto Parts. I've never felt unsafe in a junkyard, maybe its just me, now ya got me wondering

I've never felt unsafe in any junkyard I've been to. I wouldn't leave my car doors unlocked or leave valuables in the bed of my truck but I've never worried about anyone bothering my person.

awesome to hear 100% good comments. I was there once, didn't feel unsafe either but read on here a string about the charlotte pull-a-part and it got me wondering too if I was just dumb and blind to my surroundings. Thanks a bunch.

To continue, any thoughts on the Greensboro yard - GAPCO? I saw something on the web but not a very good website to figure out what it was as I recall. I got the impression it was previously pull your own stuff but had changed. Cool if not, always fun to cruise the heaps for treasures.

I've actually went to the ones on 70 between Haw River and Mebane and pulled my own parts and come out with decent prices. Been a couple years back tho. Just have to go in the office and ask, never got told no.

GAPCO has a pull-your-part yard and another yard where they pull the part for you. They are side-by-side and I've been to both. It's a decent yard, prices at the pull-a-part yard are pretty decent. They usually have a special going, such as everything in a wheel barrow for $65, all you can carry for $35, etc.

She's pretty cool & auto savvy to boot. She'll mark your "warranty" items where it can't be seen, where the others will scribble it in 6" letters with yellow paint :shaking:

That's funny! I see the "habla" crowd with their entire family wandering around :D

I live about 5 minutes from there & always find a deal... some I just didn't go there to find. While PAP is usually FULL of "questionable" looking folks, I've never felt unsafe there... leaving a roadworthy vehicle in the parking lot is another subject!

My daughters love the place. Whenever I get done harvesting, I usually have to go hunt them down from their wandering around.
Everyone in my family has VIP passes so they can go and look when I'm there...... that's just hilarious to me.

This is hilarious. I feel better now. I am not the only one who finds parading around a junkyard to be fun. My wife thinks I am a total damn moron for that. She tolerates it because there are alot of other things I could be doing that cost a lot more.
It's good for her I like it. She isn't too good of a driver so I have alot of cause to be there. Our daily drivers are mid-90's mercedes so always something falling off even when she doesn't hit crap. This past week she was minding her own business driving down I-40 in Burlington and a damn fender flew off the trailer she was following! WTF. How the hell does a fender just fly off on the road. The dude must have been clueless about his equipment. It went under the left front of the car, tore the bumper cover all to hell, cut the tire, bent a small diameter tubular cross member under the radiator (fortunately didn't damage the radiator), tore up the undercover that the MB's have under the motor, also bent the backing plate on the drivers side front wheel (brake backer sheet metal). Except the tire and the cross member tube, it is all cosmetic and part replacement. It's an old car so as long as she is OK I don't really give a hoot, it's another fun project now but still, if the fender hit higher she'd have been wearing the damn thing. I told her she should have called the police. There is no excuse for that flying off. I have old stuff and that is fine, my junk isn't falling off and 80 MPH though. Not her fault but somehow she manages to get into this crap all the time. I made a subtle suggestion that maybe she was following too closely and of course all hell broke loose at the implications in my tone so I just shut up and will fix the damn car. :shaking:

My wife's the same way...

ME: Did you SEE the Coke bottle you ran over?
Her: What bottle?
ME: The bottle you ran over that cut your brand new tire!
Her: How do you know it was a bottle?
ME: Because the bottom of the bottle is *STILL* lodged in the carcass!

And you fell for this story?

I'm going to venture a guess that one of the places she frequents is in need of some retaining wall repair...lol

LOL. She must never find this forum! I am dead if she does.

BTW I am CCW so I notice these things now ..... they have a "No Firearms" sign.

I thought the new revisions done away with that.
