ok so when i hook the batter up turn the key motor turns but does not turn over the neg lead starts to somke and melt oh and when you turn the key off its still trying to turn over 75 cj5 304 amc
 
I'm not sure on the alternator, like the strapping holding the fender together. Start with some new cables, terminal ends, and a new soliniod (main problem). Buy a repair manual that has good wiring diagrams and start tracing wires on the alternator.
