Wanting a decent set of SAE wobbles in 1/4" & 3/8" flavors that will withstand light impact use, BUT...
Having a hard time wadding thru the "budget friendly" Amazonian/Chiwanese offerings and the tool truck varieties requiring 2nd(3rd) mortgages.

Recommendations for hobbyist use without needing (another) part-time job to pay for them, that fall between these ranges?

Have you checked ebay for used tool truck stuff? Sometimes its the same as new, sometimes there are deals to be had.

I’ve got several different brands bout off the tool truck, the harbor freight work about as good as the rest

I use Sunex for pretty much all my sockets, Astro would be another one I would look at. Have had these for awhile now and they pretty much always get used with my Milwaukee impacts. It's cheaper to get them in the full set with other impact sockets ($230ish for metric or sae), pretty sure they're $100 or so for each set of metric or sae by themselves.
