Wife's stock '02 WJ, 4.0, auto, 140K miles:

steering wheel wobbles back and forth at certain speeds. She says when she brakes, it doesn't do it. Could this be warped rotors or a tire balance issue? I don't remember what speeds, it seems like maybe around 40 and then goes away and then again at 60, but not real sure. I can drive it tonight and tell if it would help with diagnosis.

It could be broken belts in the tires. Check by jacking up each wheel, turn it slowly and look for out of roundness or tread grooves wobbling back and forth. This is usually a problem in high milelage tires. Always check for play in steering and suspension componets as well as tire balance.

Its not warped rotors if it goes away when she hits the brakes.

Have you checked the alignment? tires balanced? rotated?

The fronts were wearing uneven, front to back. No signs of belts. Will get it balanced and aligned next week. Thanks guys.
