My girl and I and trying to go skiing near the end of next month. Never been before (I want to snowboard) and we don't want to drive very far since we will only be staying for 2 days maybe. Just a long weekend trip. The 2 places I am looking at are wolf ridge resort and App ski mountain resort, which are about the same distance from me, App is probably a bit longer but not by much....for 2 people who just love snow and want to be out in it and have some fun trying to snowboard/ski which one would be the best? does wolfridge have a place to stay overnight?

As an experienced boarder and past resident of Boone I can say I have never been to App ski mountain. The hills in my backyard are steeper and longer than that POS single bunny slope. If its your first time then thats probably your best bet, but for me that slope doesnt look any fun...

I usually do Hawksnest, Beach or the best being Sugar. Im going possibly Sunday to Sugar. Havent heard of Wolf Ridge?

app. is beginner friendly. hawksnest is tubing only now, sugar and beech are both nice but are futher away.

I like wolfridge. 2 lodges on weekends(lower only weekdays) with great scenery. First time we went on a thursday upper lodge was closed but we went in and manager or owner was super nice.

Never been to App.

Take a lesson and prepare to hurt......a lot.

No input on where to go and whatnot. I stay away from the NC mountains for riding or skiing. Way too crowded on the weekends and not enough terrain, IMO. Acutally, I do have some input. For a weekend trip, drive to Winterplace in WV. It's worth the extra hour drive, they have a very large beginner area, great beginner rates and decent lessons for kids. Not sure about adults, but they took my daughter and 4 hours later she was kinda managing the greens.

Go to somewhere in Boone. I've worked ski patrol at Wolf and have skied in Boone many times and there's really no comparison. It would be much easier to learn how to ski/board in Boone.

I will check out winterplace...didn't think about that one. We are going to rent a car to go up there unless I can finish my jeep up before we go...so I didn't want to spend TOO much on this trip aside from lodging and food.

Sugar is the place to ride.... but everywhere has had shitty snow so far this year.

For those that have been to winterplace/app/wolfridge....where do you guys stay? I wanted to stay at the resort at winterplace but its like $225 a night! I didn't pay that much for my hotel room in NY!

Does ski patrol pay decent? What all does it take to work it?

No it doesn't pay good at all. The big benefit is being able to ski for free. When I did it, you got a pass for yourself and a guest pass so you could take another person with you anytime you went. If you ski a lot it's well worth it. You either have to be an EMT or have a wilderness medical certification (not sure the exact terminology for it) and you have to be proficient skier (haul a sled down the mountain, etc.)

^^^I think he means WFR... wilderness first responder
