Does anyone know a place around Gastonia/Charlotte/Lincolnton that would be able to cut me a chunk of wood for a fireplace mantle? Some type of Rustic lookin thing.

All I really need is a chainsaw, a 6ft trunk, and some time but I've got neither.

Any recommendations for wood type? I know next to nothing about wood.

I've got some oak that I've been making some big cuts on, practicing for something like this. I know you said 6ft long, how thick and deep? Or do you want the bark still on it. Shoot me a PM and we'll talk details.

Cedar makes a nice mantle. My parents had one cut and distressed with some chains. Looks real nice!

Carolina Mill Works in Hickory can get you what you want. If you are looking for something from an old Mill, there are a couple of guys outside of Granite Falls that can prob hook you up. I guess in the end it's all in what you want to spend.
I always liked the sawmill sab personally. Cheap and I'll smooth one out for you for a bottle of  Or leave it rough and oil finish it. All that for less than $50 including gas!!

I've seen a couple of mantles made out of old railroad ties that look really good and they are cheap or free.

that's a deal! Me Like!

I cut mine from a red oak, used my uncle's sawmill to cut the heart out , need to make sure it is really dry mine had been down about 8 years from a previous hurricane. I also used a chainsaw to hollow the backside out like a canoe to lighten it and beat it with a pipe and chain and hacked on it with a machette and stained it. The dryer the better so it doesn't shrink a lot.

Also, if it isn't dry enough, it will crack, some small, some much more substantial.

Here is the fireplace in question. Some more pics here: http://picasaweb.google.com/rbevis/Fireplace#

The width of the mantle will need to be 5ft and the depth around 8". This is what I'm thinking of doing:

Mount 2 log ends coming out of the fireplace by sliding them over a piece of rebar cemented into the brick. Then lay a slab like what GotWood has across it and nail it in place.

The wood type isn't awfully important.

Do you have wood that size GotWood? No pun intended. :shaking:

I'm liking the looks of the redoak that Bertie has.

I don't personally have anything laying around, but easy enough to get. In fact, I believe Jeffb just got some slabs the other day to build his daughter a play house. I'll find out and get back to you.
