Wood stove problems

So, I brushed it my chimney a couple weeks ago to get ready for the winter. Tried to start a fire the other day and I have back flow, all of a sudden. it started to smoke up my basement. I have had plenty of fires down there and never had this happen. I shut the door with the air vent open to try to get it to follow right. No dice. I had to close it completely off. Any ideas what would cause this all of a sudden?

There was a bird's nest in mine. I had a couple fires in the shop woodstove before I found it. It would start off ok, but die out after 5-10 minutes once the smoke choked it out. I thought the wood was too wet. But I decided to put my backpack blower up to the chimney hole and see what happened. Went outside and found a 6" round bird nest, haha.

My problem is that mine is worn out after 15 years.anybody know where to get a good heavymade one?

Could have been restriction. May have been a couple other factors. If the barometric pressure from inside and out was enormously different sometimes it's difficult to establish flow. Another factor is a really hot start up and a very cold chimney. This will cause it as well. Remember hot air rises and cold air pushes back. I have noticed both these on really heavy air days until the chimney flu is warmed up.

I've pulled a birds nest and squirrel nest out of my granny's chimney also had a baby coon in it before... screen went up after coon incident!

Watch Craigslist. They are on their either really cheap, or really expensive. Act fast and get a cheap one.

Do you have a clean out at the bottom of you chimney?

If I can't get one to draft well right off, I will start a fire in the clean out to try and warm the chimney. You can also start a fire right up at the rear of the stove, to warm the pipe, or use an accelerant on the wood, that will start fast and hot.

I do have a clean out. That's an interesting thought. It still bothered me that I have never had it happen before. And I only have a fire when it's really cold to heat the basement. I'll have to try again and see what happens. If it doesn't work, I may try the clean out trick.
