I'd like to buy a router. I've got a project that I'd like to do and it will require the use of one. I doubt I'll ever get into building cabinets and doors but for small projects it'd be nice to have in the toolbox. I was thinking somewhere around 1 1/2 hp plunge style. Any recommendations?

I'm not a woodworker anymore, but my dads had a porter cable router for probablly 25years always been pleased with it.

I'm not sure if the quality is what it used to be. May be better I don't have any pc stuff myself.

X2 on the porter cable. A buddy of mine builds custom guitars/furniture/whatever else he wants. I'm in the process of building a coffee table and a farm table at his woodshop and have used his porter cable router quite a bit. I've used it with and without the plunge option and it performs really well.

I've used PC and others. Own a small Dewalt. Either will be fine for an occasional use. Price and smaller size drove me to get the Dewalt. If I were a pro, I may would think more about the purchase. But it worked great for the once a year project I've used it for.

I've got a Porter Cable and a Bosch, both plunge, both 10 or 15 years old.. They're both really nice, for different reasons. I'd buy both of them again. I'm not big into woodworking, so they don't get used much.

Got makita and craftsman. They both work well. I use the big makita for the router table. And I have a few craftsman "professional" ones for hand use. Craftsman professional one should work well for you.

Not an owner but have used many dewalt woodworking power tools and they work good. I used a lot of plunge routers while doing timber framing and never any issues. Make sure you aren't dropping too many volts through a shitty extension chord and you are good to go.

WTF... no love for Milwaukee?

When I was looking, the d-handle Milwaukee was cool, but the plunge base kinda sucked. I went Bosch. I like it, but if I had to buy a plunge router today, I'd probably save the bucks and go with Ryobi or Hitachi. Both solid units for the money. Hell, even the Horrible Fright gets decent reviews!

The reviews of the plunge bases I've seen between the Milwaukee and the Bosch said the red one was superior. Shrug.
