So earlier in the year I created the basement vs workshop thread and I really appreciate all of the responses and I finally came down on the side of workshop!! Not so FAST forward, and slowly but surely, the city is closer to doing their thing (easements) which will allow me to do my thing (build a house). It has been SIX+ years now so don't expect anything too fast but papers have been signed by important people and I am being told when they get signed, we sorta, maybe, could be almost ready..sigh.
FYI, I own / will be building on 2ish acres in Kernersville, gentle slope to the rear of the property, long road frontage with dead end. The plan at the moment is the house will be first, driveway and on far side of that is the workshop and will have garage doors facing towards the house and towards the street with the tall A side facing the street.
What do I want to do with this thing anyway? Well, scope creep has taken us from my original project to something now that I can pull a motorhome into from the street side. I also want a lean to / carport section on the back where the RV will normally sit outside / covered but out of my workshop space.
Based on some earlier postings / workshop / pole barn threads and such, I have been eyeballing 40x60 barns, with a 14' high roof so I can fit the RV inside. That could be overkill and I am open to discussion here as steel trusses could allow me to fit RV in the center without the walls needed to be quite that high.
What else is going in here? Honestly that changes day to day, year to year. Motorhome will be on the outside but I do want the ability to pull it inside if I want to work on something. Motorcycles, Kayaks, Cars / Trucks / JEEPS, UTVS, tractors, maybe a 2 post lift and maybe a "paint booth" area. My hobbies tend to ebb and flow.
Budget...I am seeing "kits" for $12-20k, installation is an unknown though some of the metal building people include them (and concrete) for up to mid 20s in a few cases. I am thinking of say $30k, and then depends on what is left over/under, want to insulate and figure out heating / cooling and such.
So, links are VERY welcomed, I already snagged R&R metal works / morganton, Burke Barns (also Morganton) and been on a few places like Hansen Pole Barns. (40x60x14 $13300)
Local builders that you used, trust, avoid and all thoughts and tips! In theory this land will be in Kernersville city limits (voluntary annex as part of easement thing) so zoning and stuff is applicable.
One possibility that I want to explore is as we get close to selling our home, building the barn immediately to actually store our stuff in as the new house is being built (6 months) Thought being I would not have to pay for storage, but not sure if I can even get temp electricity to that building or hook into the construction stuff as the house is built, etc.
